Repair guides and disassembly information for the 16-inch MacBook Pro released in November of 2023, featuring M3 Pro and M3 Max SoCs.

Battery issues after screen replacement

I performed the screen replacement from the website. The good news is the new screen seems like it's working perfectly. The bad news is that the battery seems like it is not working at all. There is an X over the battery symbol and it says it's on AC power.

I'm afraid I may have damaged the battery connector reference in step 20 of the repair. It says to life the hinge no more than 45 degrees, but I missed that. I lifted the hinge probably slightly more than 90 degrees. Is it really that delicate? I guess it's also possible the battery data cable could be the issue. I dropped it on the floor while doing the repair and it got kind of dirty. My only other thought it maybe I didn't torque down the screw enough in step 19. Hoping to get anyone's thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Here are my connectors. I suppose they look somewhat loose to me, but I was afraid of pushing them in further for fear of bending the ribbon cable.

Re-seat and clean the battery data cable.

Reset SMC.

If still “X”: replace the battery data cable.

If still no battery detected: logic board connector is damaged → board-level repair required.

@ben58240 - Can you take a few pictures of the battery connection as they are now as well as the battery data cable connections (both sides) Steps 15 ~19 and post them here so we can see what's happened.

@ben58240 - Your second image looks like the cable end is not square in the ZIF connector. Install this gem of an App CoconutBattery let's see what it tells us so we can check the battery power connector.
