Shutter release button stopped working, remote still works
The button no longer works. I can still shoot using the plug-in remote. Is it possible to open the housing to inspect and repair the switch or connections?

Hello @davepivin
Once I tried to get inside a Canon camera and personally I found it to be a task that requires a lot of time, patience and skills. If you have plenty of all three you might come out of the experience victorious but in my case for example I was never able to get to where I needed, let alone put everything back together. But that's me!
Before you decide whether you want to get to it from the inside, or bring it to someone that can do it for you, you might wanna try to spray a small amount of electrical contact cleaner in the space between the button and the body, and then press the button several times. All of this while the camera is switched off with battery removed from the battery compartment.
It worked wonders for me with other things that I didn't want to take apart. As far as I know it cannot cause damage long as you spray moderate amounts.
If you decide to try this make sure not to use a lubricant. I've heard of many people using WD40 for contacts, although it might work for some I think it is important to use a product specifically designed to clean electronics. They sell it in spray cans that have those tiny red straws to direct the stream of stuff coming out.
Best of luck to you!

Thanks for your suggestions. This failure happened suddenly, but wasn’t noticed until I tried to use the button. It was dropped, but without any external damage to the case. I suspect a flex circuit connection has come loose, but it could very well be helped by DeOxit. I found a disassembly video that will help expose the switch assembly.

Hello Dave! I see, if it stopped working after a fall the only way forward is inward, just like you envisioned. But I bet you are young, have time and with a good disassembly video skills are optional! Please, not if but when you figure out how to fix it, can you please let me know what it was? And how easy or hard it was to take it apart? Thank you!

I have lots of time. I am a retired electronics engineer with all the tools I would need to dive into disassembly. You lose your bet…I’m 79. I will post my discoveries and results. 😁

Hahaha! My clairvoyant abilities are on par with my Canon teardowns. I'll stay tuned for discoveries!
