The Nintendo Switch is a handheld game console that can be played on the TV via a docking station, or on the go. Released March 3rd, 2017.

Loose LCD connector ribbon?

I had been using it normally, until these very fine vertical black lines appeared all over the screen. The colors of the pixels would then start to 'bleed' out, forming these bright horizontal bands. I've hopped between a few forums, and apparently a few others have had similar issues. Commenters said that it was a potentially loose LCD connector ribbon cable, so:

  1. I'd like to know if this is the case for my device, and if so, how exactly should I fix it. Would disconnecting and reconnecting the ribbons suffice?
  2. If it isn't just a mere loose cable, could it possibly be an issue with the LCD itself? If so, would it be better for me to take it to a repair shop?

Hi!

Could be many things. The following could be the case:

  • LCD is broken and need to be replaced
  • LCD connector on the motherboard went bad (uncommon)
  • LCD it's ribbon cable is damaged/broken
  • GPU is getting bad/dying

What I would do first is cleaning the motherboard with isopropyl alcohol (including the LCD ZIF connector). And see if that is doing something. If not, I would replace the LCD completely and see if that solves it.

If that it also failing, then it's motherboard/GPU related and you might want to check the board first for shorts and otherwise replace the GPU there. But the problem is, is that this kind of repair is really difficult and requires soldering... And the right equipment to get it done.

Here is the guide for replacing the screen: Nintendo Switch LCD Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

If you think that this would be too difficult, then please don't try to open it and go straight to a local repair shop (or Nintendo) to get it fixed!

Wish I had better news... Sorry!

Open it up and disconnect and reconnect the ribbons. I had one in for repair at a shop I worked at and it turned out a ribbon was not seated properly. Worked perfectly afterwards.
