When playing the godfather the dons edition. I can open doors with the triangle button but it doesn’t work to get into vehicles or answer phones. Tried numerous controllers with the same result.

As you have tried multiple controllers, it's probably something else.
Does it only happen in that game?? If yes, it's probably a bug...
Please try reinstalling the game (if downloaded). Otherwise make sure that the game is fully up to date.
