My car is overheating

I have replaced the water pump, the thermostat twice, the radiator, the temp sensor, gallons of antifreeze and my 2006 buick rendezvous still overheating. The antifreeze is not leaking out, I dont know where its going. And if you don’t keep your foot on the gas it tries to die. Please any suggestions would help

@pambrazealwalls would you mind pulling a spark plug or two and posting some pictures of the spark plug faces? This will give us an idea if your engine is burning the coolant.

I took pictures, but I couldn’t get them uploaded. So, I took them to a mechanic and he said those were the cleanest burning spark plugs he’d ever seen. But he also told me, it must have air in the system and those vehicles were hard to get the air out. He wasn’t kidding 😞 my car has been broke down 2 weeks and I have 2 jobs, I’m bout to flip chickens having to get rides to and from, several times a day.. No one knows whats wrong with it, it’s frustrating.

Hi @pambrazealwalls

Beside the above suggestions, try the following:

If you haven't already replaced the radiator hoses, with a cold engine, check if both of the radiator hoses feel firm (not stiff- bit pliable) but not soft or spongy. If they feel spongy they could be deteriorating internally and restricting the flow of coolant through the system.

You can also check with a hot engine (not running) whether they feel firm when squeezing them, they should not push in at all.

Also to check if there's any restriction to the coolant flow, with a cold engine, remove the radiator cap and then start the engine and let it run. After a while you should see the coolant start to swirl in the neck of the radiator indicating that the thermostat has opened and that the coolant is being pumped through the engine. When you see this happening, quickly turn off the engine to prevent the coolant from flowing out of the radiator as it expands due to being heated.

Be safety aware when trying this. Ensure that the car is safely parked, with the handbrake firmly applied and watch for any loose clothing, hair, where your hands are etc as the engine is running!

Are you seeing white smoke out of the tailpipe? A blown head gasket could account for all of your issues; it sounds like it's letting your antifreeze leak into the combustion chambers where it's getting vaporized. A bad enough leak could easily cause the car to idle rough as well.

Check the oil; the antifreeze could also be getting in there; if so it'll be brown and possibly frothy like a good cappuccino. That would be another good indication of a leaking head gasket. You can also pull the spark plugs and see if they're wet; if one or more is markedly different in appearance from the rest that can be another clue.

You can also do it the way a mechanic would, and use a head gasket test kit. Basically what you do is bubble air from the radiator through a chemical that reacts to the presence of hydrocarbons that would indicate a head gasket leak. You can buy an inexpensive kit for somewhere around $20 USD, or many auto parts stores have a loaner tool program where you can borrow the kit and just buy a bottle of the chemical. Usually they have you put down a deposit that's the same as the price of the kit, but when you return it, you get your money back. Here's an example from AutoZone of the kind of kit I'm referring to.

Loaner Blown Head Gasket Tester

Of course, you can find similar kits in plenty of places like Amazon among others.

It is not smoking at all and the oil isn’t milky. When you take the radiator cap off to let circulate, it starts coming out of the radiator. We have checked the radiator hoses.
