The Nintendo DSi is the third iteration in the Nintendo DS line, and made its debut in Japan in late 2008.

Why does the console shut off when moving the top screen?

i recently got this nintendo dsi and for the most part it has no issues but if i move the top screen or accidentally bump it the console shuts off. It can be really annoying when in the midst of a game because if i have to get up i have to very gently set it down in case it shuts off and i cant close the screen and keep the console on so i don't lose my save.

I opened it up in hopes it was a loose cable or something but i dont really know what to look for i’ve attached photos of what it looks like, does anyone know what could be the issue?

Hi there!

Yeah, it’s most likely one of the cables that is having issues! I cannot see in the photo’s which cable it is. On the other side of the motherboard is the top screen cable connected, can you share a photo regarding that one too?

At this point, testing other parts would be a plus, so you can see which part/cable is failing… I would start with unplugging cables and see which one it is..

Hello thank you for your reply! I reopened it and got to the back of the motherboard as well ( i have now attached a photo) unfortunately this is my first time ever opening a console so i have no idea how to go about testing the cables i really was hoping it was an easy fix i could do myself cause i cant find anyone close by to take a look

My pleasure! Thanks for showing that side as well! To be honest, the ribbon cables looks fine by the eye. But it's possible that there is some damage we can't see. For now, you only can test the parts and see which part is faulty. You can disassemble it a bit more and show us what is behind the top screen. But this is difficult... You can always ask a local repair shop to do some testing.

If you disconnect the upper screen LCD cables the console won't boot. Somehow the upper LCD has to be detected by the console in order for it to boot, otherwise the blue light would come on and the screens will not light up.

The upper screen ribbon cable is likely damaged or worn, causing the console to shut down. If Nintendo handheld consoles don't detect a working upper screen, they simply shut down without a warning. In your case the ribbon cable is probably damaged by the constant flipping motion, which causes it to disconnect somewhere and shut the console down. Disconnecting it would lead to the same issue; the console simply won't boot. The only way to see if that's the case is to buy a new upper screen and see if it works. I had the same issue with the NDSiLL I bought secondhand, and I had to buy a new upper screen.

Just to be clear, this is the display ribbon cable. I think you mistook the antenna and microphone cables for the cables @dan0 mentioned
