Clean the rollers to prevent tape from being "eaten":
Use high-concentration isopropyl alcohol, 99%, if you can find it and a Q-tip (cotton swab) to clean the pinch rollers and capstan, remove any Iron oxide residue 'til your swab no longer gets soiled. This keeps the tape path clean and improves the grip and lessens the chance of damage to your tapes.
So:
1. Power off and remove your tape.
2. moisten a good quality cotton swab (less fiber shedding) in isopropyl alcohol. Don't use rubbing alcohol, as it usually has scents and oils.
3. Gently clean the pinch roller and capstan (The white plastic roller and the thin metal one) with the swab while turning the roller to get to all of the surfaces.
4. Repeat using a dry swab to remove excess moisture.
5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until no more brown or black oxide residue comes off.
When you've done that, set it aside to dry completely before using it again.
To prevent future problems repeat this every few months, it should also make your music sound better!
If the rollers shed black residue, they may need replacement.
Good Luck!
