Hi @judyh8463
The washer is basically a Whirlpool machine as it uses Whirlpool parts only, Kenmore doesn't make appliances, it sells rebadged/made to order other brands e.g. LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, to name a few. Being a Whirlpool model, normally there's a tech sheet/wiring diagram (part number LIT8526174) located inside the control panel. I couldn't find it online so hopefully if it is there, it will help to pinpoint what's wrong.
It does seem like the cycle timer (part #WP39551840) may be faulty as it should automatically step around the various functions i.e. wash, rinse spin, once it is started, but there may be other problems.
Here's a video that shows how to replace the cycle timer in a Kenmore top loader which may help you to check if the tech sheet is in the control panel or not. Hopefully it is. Note the timer part number in the video is not the same as the one used for your model.
If the tech sheet is there, post an image of it in your question
Here's how to do this on ifixit Adding images to an existing question
It's late here, so I follow up tomorrow.
Cheers

Hi @judyh8463
Does it do this on different cycle options e.g. ultra clean or permanent press or only on the one wash cycle type?
If you move the cycle timer knob to the rinse position (any cycle type), does the cycle timer continue to move through to spin etc?

Hello
thank you for responding :)
for question 1- yes it does it even on ultra clean and permanent press cycle stays on wash mode
question 2 -same for the permanent press & ultra clean - if I manually move the knob a BEFORE the rinse line it starts to spin the water out but ...it just keep spinning and not move past that . I then need to manually stop and then move the knob over to rinse cycle line /water comes in rinse will start as usual but again it just stays on rinse mode and on that actual line ] I dont see it move past that and just keeps it rinse mode and then again need to manually change to spin cycle to get the water out and still just keep spinning and spinning .
if it helps in any way the kenmore washer I have when i open the lid it DOES NOT stop the cycle or agitator at all so maybe it a no lock lid?
