The second generation Optima, known as the Kia Magentis globally except the United States and Malaysia, and as the Kia Lotze in South Korea, was launched in South Korea in November 2005.

Bypass pulley or shorter belt?

I have an 08 Kia Optima. My AC compressor pulley is warped and hitting up against the AC compressor. Is there a shorter belt I can get that will bypass the AC compressor pulley or do I need to get a bypass pulley?

It appears there are two different engines and trim levels on your Optima; for a precise answer we'd need to know if you have the 2.4L or 2.7L engine, and the EX or LX trim.

That being said, on at least one model the parts list shows two serpentine belts; one with A/C and one without. I can't tell if you can just buy the shorter belt and install it, or if you would have to pull the compressor and/or install some sort of extra pulley.

@staceycoffey No, I meant there are two different belts for sale for the car; a longer one for cars with A/C and a shorter one for cars without. Obviously you currently have the one with A/C, but you should be able to go to an auto parts store or a dealership and buy the one for cars without A/C. It will be the proper length and would be worth trying to install, but the routing may be different from your current setup and it's possible another idler pulley or some such device could be needed.

Okay, I think I have an answer for you. Some guy on YouTube had exactly the same problem on an 08 Kia Rondo, which appears to use the same engine as your Optima. He measured the required length of the belt and found one from a Mazda that's exactly the right length. As a bonus, he included a diagram showing how the new belt is routed, bypassing the compressor. Here's the video.

I took a screenshot of the belt routing diagram he provided.

@dadibrokeit Sweetheart you are the absolute best!! I spent a lot of time contemplating on what I wanted to do. And bypassing with a shorter belt is the route I decided to go. If I figured it out right an 80 inch should work but I was still caught on the question of how to reroute it. I'm doing most of this by myself. My dad is best friend, and I've been under the hood with him since I can remember. Now he's up there in age and not exactly in the best of health so without him it's been a challenge. I can't tell you how grateful I am for all your help! I'll keep you updated on how it goes. And again, thank you so much!!

@staceycoffey Here's information on the belt specified in the video. It's a Dayco 5060825 6PK2095S. It fits a 2004 Mazda 6 with a 3.0L engine. it's 82.5 inches long, a little more than your estimate, but seems to fit perfectly.

Amazon has it, along with several auto parts stores, so shouldn't be any trouble finding it.
