Identify remote control problem

I would like to start repairing an old Samsung TV remote control, but first I would like to identify the problem using a multimeter and then start soldering.

First of all, what should I check?

Hi @piero90

Might depend what's wrong with it. What symptoms is it showing e.g. not working at all, some buttons work others don't etc.

If not working at all, insert fully charged (or new) batteries into the remote and then use the camera in a mobile phone to check if the IR LED in the remote is turning on when a button is pressed.

Open the camera app in the phone and then point the IR LED end of the remote towards the phone so that you can see it in the screen. Press any button on the remote and check if you can see the IR LED turn on.

If you can see the light turn on, check if all the buttons are working. If some are and some aren't (usually the Power, Volume and Channel buttons fail first), it means that the contact surface of the button has worn away with use. You can try opening the remote and cleaning the button contacts and the board with Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ to see if this fixes it but more likely it won't so the contact surface will either have to be fixed using remote control contact pads or carbon conductive ink

If you can't see the light turn on, check that the battery terminals aren't corroded and then check if the battery voltage appears on the board.

After that you will just have to trace the power around the board to find out why the light isn't working when a button is pressed.

@piero90

Did you try the suggestions in my answer, you never said?

@jayeff I haven't tried it yet, maybe today or tomorrow.
