Samsung Refrigerator - Very loud popping noise every 1h30/2h

Hi,

Just bought a house with a RF24R7201SR refrigerator in it. There are super loud popping noises that happen randomly. It's a bit scary and would like to know if anyone experienced this ? i asked the last owner who told me that samsung specialist told him it's normal and it's due to the thin walls and differential thermal expansion (plastic parts that crack).

Well doesn't seem normal to me as it's very loud.

Anyone had this and found a fix ?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Update (09/26/25)

I wasn't able to check the compressor running or not yet, but was able to record the annoying popping sound if it can help identifying the issue.

THanks.

Hi @fredericma71282

Try turning off the ice maker in the refrigerator and check if the noise stops.

@fredericma71282

When the noise occurs is the compressor running or stopped and if it is stopped has it been stopped for a while e.g. >10 minutes?

how can i know that ? not sure how to know if the compressor is running or stopped, is it by hearing it ? you suspect it would be it activation that triggers the big popping noise ?

You might be able to feel the vibrations of the motor when it is running by touching the cabinet or even hear it running.

The reason I asked is that when the refrigerator goes into its auto defrost cycle, the compressor is stopped (as is the evaporator fan) so there should be no noise or vibrations.

The defrost heater is turned on to melt the accumulated ice from the evaporator unit and sometimes small pieces of ice can fall off the unit with a noise.

The defrost cycle lasts for approx. 20 minutes before the heater is turned off and the compressor/evap fans are restarted again to continue maintaining the temps in the compartments until the next defrost cycle.

It would be unusual for this noise to occur every time a defrost cycle occurs and also that a defrost cycle occurs that often as usually they occur once every 10+ hours or even longer.

Just trying to eliminate possible causes for the noise to occur

Hi @fredericma71282

Perhaps do as @notbroken suggests and pull the refrigerator forward about 50mm (2").

Looking at an installation image in the user manual - see below, there should be a clearance at the back of the refrigerator to help with the airflow around it to dissipate some of the heat.

Bit hard to see in the video you posted, but is there an opening behind the back of the refrigerator and the back of the overhead cupboard and also a gap behind the overhead cabinet so that it is open to the ceiling above, that would allow the hot air from behind the refrigerator to escape?

If not then it seems that the refrigerator is fully enclosed (no gaps seen on either side) which is really not ideal for any refrigerator.
