The Early 2009 Mac Pro—also known as the Mac Pro 4,1—introduced Intel's Nehalem architecture to Apple's line of professional desktop computers in March 2009. The Mac Pro 5,1 used the same interior design but received further CPU updates in 2010 and 2012.

PCI-e power cable for graphics card advice

Dear Community,

I managed to buy a 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 that was flashed to 5,1. It has a 6-core single CPU Xeon X5690. It will be a nice project computer for multiple use.

I was looking at Apple's archived topic regards which graphics card to use enabling metal support on Mojave.

I found a Sapphire 7590, a Quadro K5000, and an RX 580 too. For the start I only want a graphics card in the machine so I can boot it and began use it for basics.

I also found it hard to buy the pcie power cable. I know that it needs an 8 pin to double 6 pin cable as there are two 6 pin connectors on the mobo and the 8 pin that would go into the card.

My question would be towards the community is what place or website would you recommend to order the cable from?

Thank you for all your help and kindness!

Sadly many of the sites that offered parts for these older Mac Pro's have faded into the sunset as the demand and even availability of the parts are getting hard to find just used! I like in the UK/EU TheBookYard.com as they are very much into salvaging parts from systems for reuse!

I'm not sure what the cable you are looking for beyond this power cable Mac Pro PCIe Power Cable, Graphics card - 6-pin to 6-pin. If you google the part number I'm sure you can find it on other sites as well.

Hi there Dan!

Wow, I didn't know about the website you posted. It looks fantastic with loads of spare parts.

Because most of the above mentioned GPU's have 8 pin connectors, I will need an 8 pin to double 6-pin pci-e power connector cable. I checked ebay, amazon too but they look too cheap and not that reliable.

I really appreciate your time and answer, it helped a lot especially with the website!

@mrkovacs - Are you sure the GPU board needs an eight pin connector? Make sure the board is compatible to the older Mac Pro's.

@danj Not the GPU board. The graphics card has an 8pin connector and the Mac Pro on the board side has double 6-pin connectors. : D

@mrkovacs - GPU board = Graphics Card 😁
