Smoke comes from motor when battery is attached
Impact was “dead”. I disassembled to trouble shoot. Power leads coming in read zero volts with good battery connected. Once motor was removed from housing I connected battery and motor switches on without trigger, twitching forward and reverse but smoke comes from motor and metal housing got hot immediately. I’m assuming a short somewhere. Any help would be great appreciated.

I'm not an expert about brushless drivers, but yes, there can be short-circuit, some metallic dust may fall into the motor part and cause shortage, or some insulation on wires is broken. If you can't tear down the engine to detail examine for a, for example, black (overheated) copper sections, only way is to replace the engine.
Also when running without the trigger there's a chance to engine being overloaded, so it heats more than it must.
