Repair guides and specifications of the HP Envy 17t, released in 2017. The HP Envy 17t has a 17" display, 16GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i7 processor.

HP Envy does not turn on at all...

My wife has an HP Envy 17t-cr000 laptop at home that she uses for personal and work purposes. It's several years old and running Windows 11 Home, Build 26100. She recently lost WiFi and Bluetooth and I was going to replace the WLAN module, but the screw was stripped so we opted for a dongle that restored WiFi. Everything was fine few a week or two. One day, she shut it down for the night and when she went to start the following morning, nothing happened. We tried different outlets, moved the cable in case there was a short, etc. but it was cold dead.

Nothing changed overnight that we are aware of, as it just sits on her desk. So it could not have been damaged from travel. I am presuming the possible culprits might be the battery, the cable, or the start button.

I am guessing it is not the battery. I have an old laptop that no longer works at all off the battery (even a new one), but only works when plugged into the outlet. I would presume this would be the same. Even if the battery was no longer holding a charge, it should still work when plugged in.

We don't have another power cable handy to try. I know it's not a lot to go on, but would it be worth buying another one to test?

Is there any way to tell if it's something like a faulty power button? Is there anything else it might be?

Fortunately, I backed up everything before I tried to replace the WLAN, but obviously she'd rather not have to buy a whole new computer if this one can be fixed for cheap.

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions!

Hi @gordon9756

Does the laptop indicate that the power is connected and the battery is charging when the charger is connected to it?

If not try using a known working compatible charger and check if that works OK.

If it still doesn't do this, it may be a faulty power jack (visually inspect the port for any damage and if it looks OK then the laptop will need to be opened and checked.

@jayeff Well, this is strange! I plugged it back in to double-check if any lights went on indicating power and...the thing booted up! It definitely wasn't working a few days ago even when plugged into different outlets. I am going to let it charge overnight and see what's what in the morning. I swear it must have known I had posted here and wanted to make a fool of me! LOL!

@gordon9756

If it still gives an indication of power when next connecting the charger, try holding the charger cable plug where it enters the laptop and very gently flex the cable directly behind the plug back and forth to see if it stops showing power is connected or not. Do this at the other end of the charger cable as well where it exits the charger.

Just eliminating if a fractured charger cable may be the problem and it wasn't intermittently powering the laptop/charging the battery when it was connected.

@jayeff The battery is fully charged this morning and the amber light turned white as expected. Even the Bluetooth is working again - something that stopped when the WiFi went out. The only thing not working appears to be the camera. Since she uses this for work Zoom meetings, this is an issue. The drivers are up-to-date, access is turned on, etc. The camera key on the keyboard has a red light. Pressing it does nothing. It seems like a rolling set of problems - the WiFi and Bluetooth didn't work, but I was able to get WiFi with a dongle. Then it wouldn't turn on at all, now it does and the Bluetooth is back (the WLAN is still unplugged from my replacement attempt). Now the camera stopped working. Maybe if I wait a few days it will return too! It is all very strange, but is any of this a clue as to what might be going on? Thanks!

As the camera is in the bezel at the top of the display and the WLAN and BT antenna(s) (BT uses the same antenna as WiFi) are also in the lid, try gently and slowly moving the lid back and forth to see if the camera starts working.

It could be a loose cable connection or a damaged cable where it passes through the hinge.

I can't find a hardware manual for a 17T-CR000 but there's a link to the maintenance and service guide for a 17-CR000 model, that may or may not help if you decide to open the laptop and check the EDP (video) cable connection on the motherboard (camera uses the same cable) but more importantly in the lid as the camera cable splits off from the video cable there.

@jayeff Moving the lid makes no difference. The keyboard button has a red light on. The white lite next to the bezel is on when the camera application is running, but there is no image and the red light is on on the key.

Does the camera use the WLAN modle at all? I ask because when the WiFi stopped working, I tried to remove it to replace it. The screw was stripped and rather than mess with it further, I dug out an old WiFi dongle that has been working since. However, I did not reattach the two wires on the WLAN. Should I try to do that? Or do they have nothing to do with the camera?
