Is this fan broken?

is it safe to unplug fan?

2 weeks ago, fan started giving abnormal noises. I ignored it. I thought I will clean it afterwards. But today, it started giving very abnormal noises, so if fan usage is causing damage to fan, is it safe to unplug it? My usage is low, I am using Linux as server, when idle my RAM usage is less than 4 GB, & CPU less than 1%. I am using it 24 hours.

Is Asus self cleaning feature scam?

I remember they said laptop is self-cleaning. So I thought, I don't need to clean it, was this just marketing thing? They never said, you should clean it yourself from time to time

Yes, the fan bearing is broken and you have to order the replacement part, then carefully, using small screwdrivers, replace the fan. On some models, you don't ever need to take off the heatsink to do fan replacement. If you have to, be careful to not damage the IC chips (otherwise it will kill your laptop completely), and you'll have to buy the thermal paste and change it, cleaning older one and applying a new one. I did such when I was a student.

Unplugging the fan will highly reduce the cooling system performance.

What about running broken fan? It is safe?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Yes, it's not affect anything but it will create noise. But the if fan is completely stuck, there's a chance that it can cause short circuit on fan power line.

Hi @jesto

If it's not already installed in the laptop, download and install the ASUS System Control Interface v3 software (Select Driver and Tools and scroll down to find it) and use it to monitor the temperature of the CPU.

Running a PC even at low usage, the CPU will still heat up and the fan is used to help ensure it stays it between its preset operating limits.

If it goes above this due to insufficient cooling over time e.g. erratic fan operation, then the inbuilt temperature sensor in the CPU may shut down the CPU (and laptop) to avoid the damaging the CPU.

If the fan stops working entirely then the laptop should shutdown as there is an rpm sensor in the fan that is used to signal to the BIOS that the fan is operating. If this signal is lost, there may or may not be a warning beforehand or the laptop may simply turn off.

The fan is there for a reason. If it is starting to fail mechanically, replace it. The part number should be on the fan. Search online for the part number to find suppliers that suit you best.

Note: The CPU fan is part # 13NR00S0M09011. (the GPU fan is part # 13NR00S0M10011. Just so you know which one to get).
