Replacement battery says charging but stuck at 1%

Good Morning, I have almost the same issue as another individual who posted about replacing their battery but was still getting the "service recommended" message and their charge level never exceeding 1% per the desktop/taskbar icon. However, in my instance, when I go into System Settings/Battery, the battery level shows a full charge (100% green), and when I remove the power adapter, the laptop functions normally. Of course, I would prefer that the taskbar icon recognize this as well... I guess I was just wondering if anyone had any additional ideas as to what could be causing this? Thank you!

Where did you buy the Battery?

Hi Dan, the ship date was 8/11/25. I just did the replacement yesterday 9/15/25 (it's a friend's device....). Thanks for your help!

LOL, I'm so sorry, I read your question as "when", not "where".... It was purchased through IFixit.

@bobbyrowe - No worries! Have you tried doing an SMC reset? If your Mac battery won’t charge techically just doing a full restart should clear it. See if that does it.

Thanks Dan. Can I do an SMC reset on an M1 machine? My searches are telling me no?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@bobbyrowe - just restarting, do a full shutdown and restart.the files get rebuilt.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Hey Dan, just did a full shutdown, waited 10 seconds, and restarted. Interestingly, the laptop behaved as if the battery was dead and I had to plug it back in to actually boot up, but it still came back in the same condition. Is that indicative of an issue with the underlying system itself? I don't know. Also, I should mention that this device is running an older OS, Ventura, although it's the latest revision of that OS. Could that matter at all?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@bobbyrowe - Not good☹️

I would get a replacement Battery from the iFixit Store just to remove the battery as being the issue.

I'm leaning to either the battery board data cable or the batteries ZIF connector is messed up creating a short so the data is not getting through. Review Steps 7 thru 17 with the data cable MacBook Pro 14" 2021 Battery Replacement make sure the cable is not damaged and the ZIF connectors are not damaged or missing the latch.

The macOS release is not an issue here. If the fresh battery and/or cable didn't change things there's something deeper going on.

OK thanks. I'll crack 'er open again and take a look.

Navigate to the user folder/Library/Preferences and find 3 or 4 files com.apple.power* .plist and delete them, empty the trash, reboot and see if that helped.

Hi livfe, I will try that. Stay tuned, thanks.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Hi livfe, no com.apple.power type files exist under the local user's directory. There is one under root, but I'm not inclined to touch that. Thanks!

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@bobbyrowe The root directory are the ones you need to delete, they will be automatically rebuilt after the restart.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@livfe - FYi - "!! Just did the whole procedure over again (and even though the little bit of cover tape tore off on the motherboard side of the battery ZIF connector, which I replaced), the battery icon now says "charging 35%" !!"

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@danj Oh I missed that, hidden under the drop down.
