I was trying to update windows 10 and it was taking forever. The fan began making odd sounds then quit. I shut it down immediately to let it cool and upon trying to restart, got the message “no fan. Continuing may cause overheating and loss of data. Do you want to continue?” Of course I said “no.”
I need this computer because some DICOM CD’s I get won’t play on Windows 11.

@bgoa208 sounds to me like it's time for a new fan. Use this HP Pavilion Dm4 Maintenance And Service Guide to work on your computer. Page 88 will tell you all about the fan/heatsink assembly. Now, you do want to make sure you also remove all the dust and debris that may have accumulated inside your computer. Use a soft paint brush or similar to remove the dust/debris.
You will need to know if your computer has discrete graphics or UMA graphics since both of those use different fan/heatsink assemblies. HP Part numbers are listed in the same manual.
You will also need to replace the thermal paste. Use this generic guide to show you how to do that. After all of that, reassemble you laptop and let us know how it all worked out for you.

That happened to me once. The fan stopped during a Windows update and the BIOS gave the same warning. I opened the laptop, cleaned the dust, and the fan cable had come loose. Reconnected it, and it worked fine.
