Repair guides, support, and troubleshooting information for the first 13-inch MacBook Air to feature Apple's ARM-based M1 SoC (with an 8-core CPU and up to an 8-core GPU). Released in November 2020 and identified by model numbers A2337 or EMC 3598.

MacBook Air M1 not turning on without charging cable

Good evening, I have a question. I have a 13-inch MacBook Air M1, and it cannot turn on without being connected to the charging cable. However, the battery health is 100% and the charging cycles are minimal. What should I replace—the charging flex cable or the charging port? Thank you very much.

Can you install this gem of an App CoconutBatteryand take a snapshot of the Apps main window and post it here so we can see things. Then disconnect the charger and see if it stays running after about five min if it's still running take one more snapshot of CoconutBattery paste both here so we can see what happening.

As to which part needs replacing if the system is running from the charger then that removes both of the parts here in question as power is clearly getting through.

Before posting my question, I had installed macOS to erase the previous owner’s data. However, it doesn’t let me complete the process and always shuts down at a specific point during the download. Could it be because the battery is already dead and can’t provide power to the SSD and the CPU for the process to finish? In other words, if I replace the battery, will macOS download normally?

@malamakons28077 - Did you run Disk Utility to delete the current partitions creating a new single partition and then running the OS install process?

Your issue is clearly not a power issue if that was the case the system would have shutdown not stay running and freeze up.

Maybe someone local can help you who has deeper Mac experience.

Good evening,I have created a macOS installer on a USB stick from my M3 MacBook in order to install the software on my M1 MacBook. The installation starts normally, but about halfway through, the computer shuts down and restarts from the beginning. I have tried this process more than five times.Could this issue be related to the battery, perhaps because it is unable to provide sufficient power to the CPU and GPU to complete the installation?Thank you very much for your assistance.

@malamakons28077 - if you are stuck trying to restore macOS you likely have a drive level issue within the NAND (Flash) storage. Often times the hidden partitions get corrupted. Which requires a full drive reformat and rebuild of the partitions. The easiest way is to create an external bootable OS installer drive to boot up from so you can properly erase the drive.

Good evening,

The issue with macOS has been resolved, and I downloaded CoconutBattery to check the battery status. It shows a battery health of 98.9%, one charge cycle, and the manufacturer name is Simple Technology Inc. It says it was installed on 2024/12/04 and is 283 days old. I assume it’s an aftermarket battery, which is why this issue is appearing. So, would you recommend that I check the flex cable or replace the battery with a new one?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@malamakons28077 - The batteries age is not very old so I doubt replacing it would alter things, as far as replacing the flex cable you wouldn't have gotten CoconutBattery reporting the battery's status if it was bad.

This is starting to look like a deeper SMC level issue. What is the systems history? Was the system working cleanly before? Do you see any obvious signs of work on the logic board?

@danj

The previous owner told me that he didn’t open it for repair at all, and he claims that he didn’t change the battery, meaning he took very good care of it. I don’t know the full history of the MacBook, and also, if it’s an SMC problem, how can I deal with it? Since he claims that he didn’t change the battery, then why does CoconutBattery show the battery name as Simple Technology Inc?

Your MacBook Air M1 shows 100% battery health, but it cannot run on battery power because the battery flex cable is faulty or loose, preventing the battery from delivering power to the logic board. Replace the battery flex cable with a new one.

Without the diagnostic data it's a toss-up which is the problem. So if CoconutBattery was installed you would be able to tell what has failed.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I didn’t get the chance to check the battery health with CoconutBattery, since I erased all the previous owner’s data and therefore had to reinstall macOS. However, during the download it freezes at a certain point, the computer shuts down on its own, and then restarts again from the beginning. Ιn the settings it shows 100%, but since the computer is 4 years old, isn’t it logical that the battery health would have decreased? Maybe CoconutBattery would have shown the actual reading.
