The March 2015 update of Apple's 13" MacBook Pro Retina Display, model A1502, features fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduces the Force Touch trackpad.

A1502 late 2015 MacBook Pro power key no longer works

After changing battery, power key no longer turns ON or OFF the computer. Only way to make it turn on is by disconnecting battery and then attaching power adapter. Tried resetting SMC and PRAM. Is there a way to check the power key?

Using a metal screwdriver or tweezers short across the two left side pads I've marked here

That should work if the power button (keyboard) is bad

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for.

So if shorting those pads turns it on that means the power key is defective? Might have gotten some alcohol in it from the battery replacement process. Any way to clean the switch from the top?

Also, does the power key go through the trackpad cable? Could that be the issue?

@jeffm99500 -

The power button is part of the keyboard and it’s cable connection to the logic-board, so either could have an issue. Alcohol wouldn’t be an issue, more likely the connection to the logic board is to set correctly. But try the power pads first, did the system startup and if it did carefully open the keyboard preview so as you hit the letter & symbol keys you can see them pressed. Let us know if any key failed to respond.

@danj Shorting the power pads does turn it on. All of the other keys work perfectly.

@jeffm99500 - I'm suspecting your issue is most likely at the logic board connection. Reference Steps 27 to 29 in this guide MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 Logic Board Replacement make sure the ribbon cable is squarely inserted and the ZIF latch is properly set. Take some good tight and sharp pictures posting them here if reseating things doesn't work.

@danj Here is the connector. I removed and re-seated but no change. Is it possible to check continuity from switch to this connector to power pads?
