No backlight 2 seconds after powering up.

Imac G5 20" intel/iSight model A1207

After powering up the iMac, I get for two seconds normal screen, then it turns black, boot noises are normal, no other anomalies.

video signal is present, I checked the screen with flashlight and can see faint text and graphics.

Putting it into sleepmode, after waking up it gives 2 second normal screen than it turns black again...

Already opened it and checked caps on PSU, inverter board and MOB, visually no suspicious parts present, the 3 diagnostic LED's are all lit.

Am I missing something here, or can this only be the backlight tube?

Would appreciate some advice here, want to keep this oldie running for sentimental reasons...

Failure is probable due to backlight inverter, and not tubes; replacement of inverter ought to resolve the issue.

Thanks for your answer, I'm going to look for a good replacement inverter....!

New developments with a happy end...

I ordered a used, but working inverter on eBay, and tried out if that would be the culprit...

Unfortunately it was not.

I searched for a similar G5 and found one which was dead but had a similar display as mine.

I switched it with mine and voila, back to life!

Probably it were the CCFL lamps who were both faulty at the same time....lesson learned.

Nevertheless I have now a spare inverter...;-))

This could get tricky! The backlight is a set of CCFL lamps just like your old fluorescent Mercury lamps which work on creating a plasma which excites the coating on the gas's tube.

Here the inverter is starting to fail and will need to be replaced iMac Intel 20" EMC 2105 and 2118 Inverter Replacement now finding a good working part might not be easy!

Thanks Dan, makes sense, I'll start with the easiest and ( hopefully) cheapest solution that is, replacing the inverter...

Will keep you informed after the results, but can take a while....
