National NV-M3 VHS Camera turns on and after some seconds off.

Hello everyone,

Just found an old Panasonic National NV-M3 VHS Camera without the original charger but with a special bag with a led, switch and fuse that is designed for a lead-acid 12v 6Ah battery. It has two cables coming off the bag that leads to the camera terminals (Only + and - ). Pretty sturdy design I think.

I tried connecting it to a Computer PSU (12.7v) but I get battery error and keeps turning off after some seconds. Sometimes the tape mechanism opens, but a tape is currently stuck there. I tried using a 13.5v power supply. Now, there is no battery error, but I get a lense error "WHITE, LIGHT" and turns off after some seconds. Is there a protection mechanism for the tape? I want to try every possible solution before I try replacing the caps. Also, I dont think it is a capacitor problem because it drops an error. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi @apopapfxpr23

Given that it hasn't been used for a long time, no doubt the battery has failed.

The camera may need the battery to at least be partly functioning for it to work.

It seems that the battery (VW-VBM3E) is no longer available and there are no equivalents online, at least none that I could find.

Found this link which may be of interest if you want to try and resurrect the battery and then check if the camera works.

Thanks @jayeff for the answer. I supplied 12.6v with external PSU directly to the battery contacts. Is it Possible that the camera needs its actual battery to work? That is a little strange

@apopapfxpr23

What is the battery voltage when measuring directly across the battery terminals outside the camera?

How many contacts does the battery itself have?

If more than just +ve and -ve then it may require further info from the battery (temp etc) for it to work.

You could try charging the battery (outside the camera) with the 13.5V for a few hours to see if it was kickstarted back into life.

According to the user manual there are safety mechanisms (not described) that will prevent it from operating but having a reasonable battery may be a good 1st step.

@jayeff, I use a lead-acid 12v 7Ah battery (The same composition as the original). The exact voltage is 12.84 volt. Unfortunately I dont have the original shells. The camera has only two contacts, positive and negative. The big lead acid battery isn't good enough, neither the computer PSU? Thanks!

@apopapfxpr23 you did try to eject the tape by using the Eject Button? Now, according to the Panasonic NV M3 SM the 8.6V circuit is the circuit "which affects the overall camera circuit". I'd start checking that out (TP15 8.6V +/- 50mV) For the whole power situation, check page 105 for the Power Supply Diagram and the one for system control. IC1001 seems to be "in charge" of all the other voltages. Start "poking" around that one.

I tend to agree with you, this does not sound like a capacitor error but possibly an adjustment error as well as multiple other setups. I would think that if any of the voltages and frequencies are out of whack, you may get different errors. I did not find "protection mechanism" but I really did not get to much into the schematics.

Thanks @oldturkey03! I will check that circuit and the voltages as you said. The protection mechanism I think is at the tape deck to protect the tape if the motor belt is broken.Thats maybe why the camera turns off.
