Information and repair instructions for Kenmore Freezer

Freezer lid liner separated from lid

I have a Sears freezer model 253.16542105. It's around 20 years old. Ice has collected between the lid and its liner, and the liner has separated from the lid. Many of the little plastic fasteners have popped off.

I have questions:

  • It looks like I'm going to need replacements for the little plastic fasteners that hold the lid, liner, and gasket together. Perhaps I'll be able to find some of them when I defrost but probably not all of them. Sears charges $88.74 for a set of them (part #5304406520). Is there a way to get cheaper fasteners that will work?
  • Why/how does this problem happen?
  • Does this problem indicate a problem with the gasket? Should I replace the gasket too?
  • Is there a different kind of insulation I can use in the lid that doesn't absorb condensation which then freezes?

I can't answer the rest of your questions, but as far as your fasteners, I'd check out your local auto parts stores, or maybe even places like Amazon, AliExpress or eBay. There are a huge number of different kinds of automotive trim fasteners, some of which will almost surely fit your freezer, and they'll be a heck of a lot cheaper than what the appliance parts stores want for basically the same thing.

For example, you can get a huge assortment of them from AliExpress for $20; a quarter of what you'd pay for the Kenmore parts.

Obviously that's overkill, but that's the general idea. Take one into your local auto parts store and see if they can match it up with something they have in stock.

Hi @gregl65

Try searching for the clip part number only to find other suppliers that may be cheaper - example.

Ice forming on the gasket indicates that warmer moist air is getting into the freezer and then condensing and freezing on the gasket at points where it appears.

The liner coming away from the lid might be due to the ice holding the lid down more tightly then it should normally, putting more pressure on the clips when opening the lid, and eventually they break

I would check the condition of the gasket.

Once you have replaced the broken clips to check the condition of the gasket (if not worn or damaged) is to place a turned on flashlight in the freezer and then check if you can see any light escaping through the closed lid. If you can then change the gasket. Doing the light test may be easier at night when it is dark ;-)
