The Nintendo Switch is a handheld game console that can be played on the TV via a docking station, or on the go. Released March 3rd, 2017.

What screws hold on the joycon rails?

My nephew decided to suplex his switch in a fit of rage and it's sheared off the right joycon rail completely, screws and all.

The housing isn't damaged surprisingly, so I'm looking to get a replacement rail to fix it up but I'll need replacement screws to boot.

Any advice on specifically what I would need? If I take out the left rail screws can I measure them in some fashion to guesstimate?

Hey,

I frequently pull apart Xbox and PS5 controllers. When I have a shortage of screws I usually google "xbox controller screws" or "PS5 controller Screws"

I've quickly done that for the joycons and here is an ebay listing I found.

I personally have not done joycons, however this Ebay seller is have personally used. This ebay seller also has an online store. I've used their ebay and website to buy both xbox and ps5 controller screws,

I might note here that screws for the Joycon aren't going to help Benneh, since it's the rail mounted to the midframe that the Joycon slides into that's damaged and the part that needs new screws.

Be aware that the only reason a Nintendo Switch Midframe Replacement guide exists is because my granddaughter did the exact same thing to her Switch. The midframe is just pot metal, and ripping the rails off also damaged the midframe such that there's no place to screw the new rail back into. There may be fixes you can do such as filling the hole with JB Weld, then drilling and tapping a new screw hole, but I ended up replacing the midframe.

You should know, however, that a midframe replacement is the most difficult repair possible on a Switch, as you have to remove everything from the Switch and transfer all of the components to a replacement frame. Not a job for the weak of heart, I can tell you!

Oh yikes, this could be the killer right here so I appreciate the insight!

I should have brought my tool kit with me but I think what I'll do to confirm is take a screw out of the left rail and see if it secures into the right rail holes.

If it does I'm in business, otherwise the midframe is damaged and that's beyond what I'd be willing to try.

@benneh You're definitely on the right track with checking to see of the screws still have a place to screw into. Other repairs I considered were to glue nuts to the inside of the damaged holes and get some slightly longer screws that will reach them. Alternatively you may be able to get away with self-tapping machine screws, although you might have to enlarge the holes in the rail to accommodate them.

@dadibrokeit the other (borderline illegal) method would be to just glue the replacement rail in.

Nephew just got a switch 2 for his birthday and the intention is attempt a repair so the switch 1 can go to his little brother, it's already got battle scars so it's unlikely if it takes more damage it's going to be possible or worth it.
