Nintendo’s first major revision of the 3DS released to Japan in October of 2014 and to North America in September of 2015. The 2015 3DS introduces improved 3D capabilities, a C-Stick, new internal amiibo support, and a new set of trigger buttons.

Broken SD card reader - replacement needs special tape?

Block Image

I needed to replace my SD card reader as I broke the original. The replacement part didn't have the metal piece that is pictured, so I tried to transfer the old piece to the replacement but ruined the tape in the process.

What is this tape and where do I buy it? I'm really confused by it, seems to be black double sided tape with silver metal tape in the middle. I'm not sure if it's meant to be stopped or helping conduction, it's really confusing me and I just need to buy something so the replacement can be installed.

Speculating here,

The black tape is probably used to bond the metal RF shielding to the SD card reader, preventing RF interference, it's commonly used as insulation, and sometimes provide correct spacing between parts, for that you can likely use any double-sided, non-conductive adhesive tape for example Tesa 61395 Tape (also really useful for adhering screens to bezels)

So, is it just any black tape or is there something else? It seemed like the original tape had metal in it too. Is the RF shielding the metal part? Sorry I just have no clue, I just know replacement parts didn't include the metal part so I'm unsure how needed it is.

Comments on Reddit mentioned it being thermal/conductive tape but didn't mention it they meant only thermal conduction OR if they meant electrical conduction, some mentioned grounding.

I'm just unsure what the metal part is doing and so what exact tape I need - I'm just confused by what seems like silver metal in the tape.

Electrically Conductive tape makes some sense to me, as it seems the metal part could be connecting to the motherboard for an electrical ground, looking at the photos in the ifixit guide

have you tried installing the replacement reader without the metal or tape?

if it works without it, its likely just shielding, if not it would be a ground connector and needs to be connected.
