The slim edition of the classic Xbox 360 with a 250GB HDD and built-in Wi-Fi. Repair requires intricate prying and special tools.

XBox 360 S - Unrecognized disc error/stuck on XBox screen

Hey folks, wondering if there's anyone out there who has any suggestions to help me get my XB360S disc drive working again. I bought this console off eBay, and the only issue I had was, it was not reading discs. Had the security sticker on it, and the plastic rivets were still in place on the end bezels. Overall, the console was fairly clean, and I cleaned everything, put new thermal paste on the GPU. The disc drive is a Hitachi-LG model. I tried replacing the laser itself (removed the anti-static solder ball), and am still getting the same problem where it can't read discs. I tried several different games and I either get "unrecognized disc", or it gets stuck on the XBox 360 logo when trying to load the game.

Hi there!

Did you tried movies as well? Do they work?

I continued troubleshooting the problem and ended up doing a firmware update to the 2019 firmware. That solved the problem and I can now play games and movies. I have never ran into this issue before, and I am hoping others have answers for this question: Do all XBox 360S console versions have built in 4GB of memory, or is that only with the older models? I went to the storage menu and noticed there are no storage devices. When I connected either a compatible (FAT32) USB drive, or an XBox memory card, the storage drives show up, but I thought there was inherent memory in the slim models, but maybe I'm wrong.

Hi Matt! Glad that it works now! Looks like it was software related.

Some Xbox 360 devices do have 250GB Harddrives installed as extra. All of them should have a little onboard memory available but not the full 4GB. But when it want to install the newest software it does request more memory (the non 4GB ones, without the HDD). So for the non 4GB devices, they do need a HDD installed to update.

Have fun gaming and take care!
