Released in May 2020, the 13" MacBook Pro features quad-core Intel 10th generation Core i5 and i7 processors, and Intel Iris Plus integrated graphics. (Model A2251/EMC3348 with four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

My laptop wont turn on

My laptop had been working fine since i got it refurbished from backmarket in march. The battery would die quicker than I was used to with my 2012 pro (but it’s a smaller battery), including times when the battery wasn‘t all the way to 0%. I would sometimes have trouble with getting it to come back on right away, even when plugged in, but didn’t think to much of it. I would just plug it in around 20%. Last week, after using my laptop normally, it died and now wont turn back on at all. I’ve tried all four charging ports, left for long periods of time and nothing works.

It has been quite humid lately and I’m wondering if I’ve got a corrosion issue, but I’m not really sure how to determine that or where it is. It seems there are a few places that corrosion could cause the device to not turn on?

Any help is greatly appreciated! It’s too new to me to not work and I really need to fix it soon.

Thank you

This series had issues with the charging logic but you also could have a worn out battery just based on the systems age.

While this battery is 58Watts (5086mAh) and your older 2012 offered 74Watts (6600mAh) the power draw of the older generation chips was greater. So one can't make a fair Apples to Apples comparison here.

As you described not getting the same run time were you running the same apps and using it equally? Often times we do more with newer gear and while the batteries performance between is not really a size issue. But it could just be a tired battery. As you bought the system used do you know if they replaced the battery.

If you can get the system to respond let's try to get more info, install this Gem of an App CoconutBattery the trial we give us what we need to see what's going on. Take a snapshot of the Apps main window and post it here so we can see.

Thanks for the response Dan. I’m not sure if the apps and use were exactly equivalent to be fair. The batteries are supposedly all replaced in the refurbished devices from backmarket, but I don’t have a way of guaranteeing that.

I can’t get any response from the laptop at all unfortunately. I believe it’s still under warranty, so I may see if I can send it in and have them check it out. Even if it’s not repairable under warranty, they may be able to tell me what’s wrong and I could do it myself?

I am concerned that I wasn’t able to back up my data and wipe the device before sending it back as is suggested on backmarkets website. Is this something I should be concerned about, or any way around?

Thanks

@mahidoiron - Ouch! You have no backups at all? Sadly these systems have soldered store]age that is not removable so no way to access the drive, in addition Apple encrypts the data so only the given system can access the data (part of the data protection your TouchID offers).

So while your data is reasonably secure (unless you failed to set up TouchID). The lack of a backup means all the data maybe lost because they swap in a new logic board Vs repairing yours. If they replace the battery or repair the logic board and you get the system back you should be OK.

When you get the system back I strongly recommend you make a backup locally and/or via iCloud, I personally do both. Next I would install CoconutBattery (or other battery monitor App) so you have a deeper view, again I find CoconutBattery as the better one. You might want to get TG Pro to monitor your systems temps and turbo the fans when it makes sense.
