Is the screen dead or is a cable loose?

After not using my Kindle for the better part of a year, it was stuck on a low battery screen. After a full charge discharge cycle, the screen started working again, although it sometimes looks like what's below with horizontal stripes and a faded image.

If I put a decent amount of pressure on the bottom of the screen, it would "fix it" and the screen would work as it should for that ~30 minute reading session. It usually reverted to being faint next time I picked up my Kindle.

Is the display possibly faulty? Or is the ribbon cable just loose? Would it be worth opening the kindle up to repair or should I just toss it out?

For some additional context, the kindle was stored in my backpack for a few months where it may have occasionally experienced pressure from stuffing my backpack.
