A1466 emc 3178 no power symptoms

Reviving an old macbook air. no idea of previous status. symptoms- connect mag safe and indicator shows green then switches to solid amber, left an hour to charge, no response from power button. reset prom, cleaned everything and different power source same symptoms. question before I open it up, should it power up connected to mag safe even if battery is dead. looking for additional troubleshooting tips before cracking it open. any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. SMC might be latched, let's pop the bottom off and just disconnect the battery with nothing else connected. Follow this guide to Step 3 MacBook Air 13" Early 2017 Battery Replacement. Then press and hold the power button a good 15 secs to fully discharge the logic board this is a hard SMC reset. Now just plug in the MagSafe cord in the system should spontaneously startup. Did it or not? If it did let it fully boot up and do a clean shutdown.

Before reconnecting the battery is the battery blotted do you see any spillage or corrosion? Reconnect the battery and plug the charger in give it a try did it restart?

If the system is still dead after the SMC reset you likely have deeper issues.
