GE GFW850SPNRS Washer Not Draining

Model Name: GFW850SPNRS

I have a less than 2 years old GE Washing Machine. The drain won't initiate.

  1. I've had this issue before in Year 1 and clearing the bottom drain filter fixed it.
  2. 2nd Occurrence, there were no signs of blockage on the drain filter so I suspected it was the drain pump. Upon disassembly of drain pump, I found the clump of hair and other objects which get past the drain filter and was found on the "L" corner of the small hose that connects to the drain pump to the drain hose. Clearing the hair fixed it.
  3. 3rd Occurrence, 1 year 6 months, it stopped draining again, this time, it's clear on the filter, disassembled the drain pump to inspect and see if there's hair trapped on the drain hose. Everything is clear. I tried replacing it with another drain pump but I can't even hear a hum sound when trying the service mode 12. I don't know though if I have a defective new drain pump or if it's the control board.
  4. The error codes are: 18 19 23 26 27 38 48
  5. I just ordered a digital multimeter to test the drain pumps.

Anything else I need to perform?

Hi @zeevidz

Looking at the mini manual for the washer, most of the error codes you listed amongst the more specific individual causes, have a common theme. They seem to indicate a problem with the water pressure sensor.

Here's a link that has a parts diagram showing where the pressure chamber is located in the washer.

Check if it or the hose connected from it to the control board are obstructed in any way.

Most likely the sensor itself is located on the control board and it reacts to the increasing/decreasing air pressure in the hose, as the water in the hose rises and falls in relation to the water level in the tub

I run pressure sensor service #10 and it looks like it completed the test. It filled water on different levels and all text blinks completed. It stopped filling water as soon as all the blinking text became solid.

Could that still be the sensor?

@zeevidz

I just found it very coincidental that error codes 18, 19, & 27 all mentioned the pressure sensor.

The manual doesn't describe how to clear any stored error codes so try disconnecting the power to the machine for about 5 minutes to hopefully reset the control board, reconnect the power and then enter the Consumer Fault Code Mode as described and check if there are any error codes still stored.

Hopefully there aren't and if so run the complete Field Service mode tests and then check what error codes are being displayed.

having that many error codes really confuses the picture as to what the problem is.

I am going to give it a try later. As far as I can remember though, I've unplugged it long enough when draining it manually from the bottom and moving it away from the plug source. As I check the error codes again, it's still the same. Is the Consumer Fault Code Mode the same as pressing the Start/Pause for 10 seconds and you can cycle to showing the error codes? If it was, then it remained unchanged even after switching the new pump. I will get the multimeter on the mail today and will try to learn how to use it so I can test if the drain pumps are good. Other than the 2 drain pumps being tested, what else could I test?

@zeevidz

Yes the Consumer Fault Code Mode check is exactly as you described.

Try forcing a reset by disconnecting the power from the washer and then pressing and holding the Start button operated for 30 seconds.

Nothing will happen because there's no power but what this usually does is that it forces the machine to attempt to start so that any residual power left stored in the control board e.g. in capacitors on the board, will be dissipated which should reset every back.

Nothing to lose by trying except a bit of time ;-)
