The check engine light is indicating that's there's something wrong with the engine.
Get the car's OBDII diagnostic port (located near the hood release handle under the dash) scanned using an appropriate scantool and check what DTC (Diagnostic Trouble codes) have been logged.
The DTC code will tell you what the problem is.
