MacBook Pro Mid 2017 (A1707): screen black unless lid almost closed

Hi,

My MacBook Pro from mid 2017 with touchbar (A1707) has a weird display problem: the screen is not working unless the lid is closed to an angle of about 30 degrees or less. If the display appears and is close to the angle where it starts/stops working, the display also flickers every few seconds. This looks like a faulty cable to me, but I have only very little experience with Apple products.

Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong and wart parts I might need to get the screen working properly again (happy to attempt the repair myself)?

Thanks,

Tom

Sadly, your system has hit the FlexGate issue! Here's more on the problem The Design Flaw Behind MacBook Pro’s “Stage Light” Effect and full wink-out when going past 45 degrees.

And the only workable solution Flexgate MacBook Repair, only rub the cable piece is no longer offered to splice in. Forcing the more expensive repair repaving the displace assembly!

dustgate or flexgate, traces in the screens flex cable have been damaged so either need to be repaired or the flex cable/s need replaced which isnt an easy process

Thanks for the replies! The flexgate description and video really fits to what I am seeing. Bummer that there doesn't seem to be an easy repair solution available. I suspect a new display unit will fail also again after a few years of use.

@tom6966 - The newer displays have a longer ribbon cable. So that should be less of a worry. Just be careful where you buy the display as you want a new one or a used one from a good salvager like TheBookYard - 13" Fn screens At least the Grade-C display price is not to bad.

Thanks for the link @Dan! In my case I'd need a 15" screen for a touchbar MBP. There don't seem any in stock at TheBookYard, but I'll keep on looking.
