An audio/video receiver (AVR or home audio receiver) is a consumer electronics component used in home theaters that convert signals into sound.

DENON AVR-2113 going into Protect

Hi guys, I'm back with a new AVR problem. Another junkshop find, this time a Denon AVR 2113.

When I first opened it up, the standby board was in a state. The TOP258MG had literally blown its lid, and there were badly damaged tracks etc. Anyways, I rebuilt that, and got the standby supply back.

While waiting for parts to arrived, I removed the main amp pcb, and found the FR channel had blown its fuseable resistors, its emitter resistors were open, and the two main output transistors were short. I replaced these components, checked the rest of the amp pcb, and reinstalled everything.

So this is where I am now: With everything plugged in and connected, the receiver will try to boot, but can't. It just clicks on and off constantly. Now if I unplug the power connector (CP403) from the amp pcb, the receiver boots up without any issues. So I thought there must be something wrong with the amp. Pulled it again, compared measurements, nothing. Can't find anything obvious.

I then measured the output of D4008 (bridge) that supplies HIGHB+ and HIGHB- and when the receiver boots, both HIGHB+ and HIGHB- climb to roughly 55v. When I power down, HIGHB- holds its 55v for ages, whilst HIGHB+ rapidly loses all its voltage. I'm not sure if this is telling of something or not? I'm thinking that perhaps this is a power supply issue and not an amp issue. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @swellenuwe

Go to the Power AMP (AMP UNIT) troubleshooting flowchart on p.94 of the service manual and check if following that leads to the cause of the problem.

Hiya Jayeff, was hoping you would pop up. I've been through that flowchart, and just went through it again. Diodes, transistors etc all test within spec. The ONLY difference, is that I replaced the OEM transistors on FR (2SD2390/C3964/2SB1560) with (C5198/BD139/A1941). I had these lying around, and am using them just to test - so these measure slightly different to the OEM ones on the other channels. I'm not sure how sensitive these receivers are to subtle changes...

To add to the above, I just lifted C5198 and A1941, and the receiver will still not boot. Only with CP403 disconnected the receiver boots, and is stable.

@swellenuwe

There's not too much differences when you look at the data sheets for the components

2SC5198

2SB1560

Perhaps check if there's a difference between any of the channels when you measure on TP4O1, TP402, TP403 & TP404 - see p.70

Channels all measure roughly 1,7mV, barring FR which is 0, as the transistors are currently out of circuit. Can't get 100% accurate measurements here as the receiver is cycling on/off. You don't think this is a supply issue? Page 141. HIGHB+ collapses very quickly after shutdown, HIGHB- holds voltage for ages.

@swellenuwe

HIGHB+ and HIGHB- are fed directly to all of the channels via CP403 so I was trying to see if by testing you could determine which channel may be the cause.

Each channel has two jumpers in the supply paths it e.g. on p.70 for the Left channel (SL) J442 for HIGHB- and J535 for B- but I don't know why one would say jumper and the other open.

If one is open and the other is closed it looks like HIGHB- only feeds a part of the amp for that channel and B- and HIGHB+ the rest of the amp on that channel.
