Why is my screen flickering?

Model Victus 15 AMD Gaming Laptop by HP
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics 3.20 GHz

I've already tried all the recommended Windows steps to fix screen flickering, but my laptop screen still flickers. Here's what I've done so far:

  • Checked if Task Manager flickers to diagnose the issue
  • Updated, rolled back, and reinstalled the display drivers
  • Uninstalled apps that might cause conflicts (like iCloud or Norton)
  • Adjusted display settings, including refresh rate and resolution
  • Disabled hardware acceleration in apps like Chrome and Office
  • Ran System File Checker (sfc /scannow)
  • Performed a clean boot to rule out background programs
  • Made sure Windows is fully updated
  • Connected to an external monitor (which worked fine, so I suspect a hardware issue)

Is there anything else I can try, or does this mean it’s likely a hardware problem? I’d appreciate any help!

Hi @tope14

Since the display on an external monitor is OK the problem is either a faulty LVDS (video) cable/cable connection or a faulty LCD panel.

When the screen is flickering on the laptop screen, try slowly, very slowly moving the lid of the laptop back and forth to check if you can make the flickering stop or even increase the rate of flickering.

If moving the lid does affect the display it could be a damaged LVDS cable where it passes through the hinge to get from the motherboard to the LCD panel or perhaps a loose cable connection (either end, motherboard or LCD panel.

If moving the lid does nothing then more likely it's the LCD panel.

What is the full model number of the laptop as shown on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop?

Knowing this will help to find the correct LCD panel for your particular model.

Here's the maintenance and service guide for a Victus 15-fa0000 which may help.

Go to p.56 (62of 89 pdf) to view the procedure to remove the display assembly and the LCD panel. This will allow you to check the LVDS cable as well.

Usually the HP part number for the panel can be found on the back of the panel itself. Search online for the part number only to find suppliers that suit you best.
