Hi Jason!

First things first, is it modded? If unknown, you might want to open it up and check if there is a modkey in it. If yes, please solder it out and remove it.

Test again, if it's still failing, you might want to replace the whole laser assembly.

After this it should probably work, if not, then it's possible that there is something damaged on the motherboard (could also be the sensor for detecting the disks).

Thanks, I had a look and could not see a modkey(think i know what I'm looking for :-)). and the first thing i tried was replacing the laser assembly. Still no luck

Alright, good thing there is no modchip in it. Does it try to read the disc's (do you hear any sounds)? If not, then most likely the sensor died on the motherboard and need to be replaced. Also what Ted said is true. Could be a game from a different region. The PS1 is region locked. But when this is the case, it actually tried to read the game, so you should hear sounds.

Thanks again.

Yes i can hear it making noises, so sounds like its trying to read it.

The discs appear to be compatible, both Discs and Console say PAL. Might look at a new motherboard, just in case.

Hmm, it's possible that the laser assembly replacement is broken too. Did it had the exact same issue? If yes, then it's most likely something else, but could still be the issue. You can try another laser deck, if that one fails too, then it is something on the motherboard...

Put a clean unmarked disc in it and turn it on. Then click on the memory card image on the screen. If it doesn't work it could be a different region model.
