What is this black stringy thing? Did I break my iPhone?

Block Image

I opened my Iphone and this black stringy thing is sticking out from the bottom right of the phone. Did I break my Iphone? Is this piece important? Can my phone be saved or do I need a new one now? If my phone is not damaged, how do I safely remove this? I really hope this is just the adhesive.

Also is it safe to continue with repairs?

Update: it does seem to outline the inside of the phone. If I put it back in it fits along the edges perfectly. It is very sticky. It supports my theory of it being adhesive, but can anyone confirm?

That is indeed the adhesive, holding down the screen in addition to the screws and securing it to the frame. It is nothing to be worried about; in fact, after a repair the old adhesive is usually discarded and replaced with new ones to ensure the screen stays adhered. In some phones it is also used to make the phone waterproof by sealing up the crack between the screen and the frame. However, the iPhone 6s is not waterproof, so you can even choose not to install it. It is best to replace it though, as the adhesive helps prevent dust from entering the device.

you'll need to disconnect the screen first as you don't want to break the cables connecting it to the motherboard. Then, use a pair of tweezers to just pull it up from the mid frame. They should be pretty easy to remove. Follow this guide to remove the screen first, and then remove the adhesive on the mid frame. iPhone 6s LCD and Digitizer Replacement

If you take apart modern phones you'll pretty much always see those. Again, it is nothing to worry about.
