2014 MBP (A1398) shuts down randomly after replacing battery
Hi all, I've gone through the battery replacement with the battery replacement kit from ifixit, after installed the battery, i followed the instruction to:
- charge all the way up to 100%
- kept charging for 2+ hours
- using the battery until the laptop shuts off
but after that, after charging it up back to 100% and trying to use it, it's been shutting off randomly for me.
i've tried:
- resetting PRAM
- resetting SMC
and it's still shutting off randomly. both plugged in and not plugged in.
I checked MacOS system information. Under hardware, it says cycle count: 2, condition: normal. so maybe the battery is not faulty?(saw a few ifixit threads where people had to get replacement battery from ifixit, hopefully i won't have to do that)
some of the scenarios i'm running into:
- earlier it would turn off in the middle of watching YT videos
- now it's been like: turning on the laptop, with the battery connector showing green LED which means it's fully charged, but after logging in, the laptop shuts down immediately
I saw another post linking to this article about disabling csrutil
but i'm avoiding that for now.
currently for testing i turned on the laptop while holding cmd
+ r
and in the "MacOS Utilities" screen it's been ~30 minutes and the laptop is not shutting down. could there be some application during normal login that would cause the laptop to shut down?(didn't think that was possible)
unfortunately i cannot get coconutBattery because it requires macos12, and i'm running macos10(and i don't want to run installer to update then laptop shuts down randomly during lol
what could be the issue? thanks!

You can download an older version of CB from their website (Scroll to the bottom) https://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutb... and try that but there is for sure a deeper issue playing out here, try booting up holding the "D" key to get to apple diagnostics and see what it reports (With the charger connected).

thanks! tried booting up holding "D" key, and it showed no issues found reference code: ADP000"
i've noticed that when booting up in safe mode (holding "shift" key), the laptop doesn't shut down randomly so i'm guessing it's software issue....

@windowssuxx Safe mode will / should prevent the laptop from overheating which is more likely caused by a failing or faulty component....... what software do you have installed ?

not sure what the software is causing it to shut down, because I just tried logging in normally and just browsing files on Finder, the laptop shuts down after a few seconds. In safe mode laptop still shuts down randomly but more rare lol
was on macos10.12 and had to use FF ESR, but have upgraded to macos10.15 and upgraded FF to regular version while in safe mode, maybe that'll help. (was typing this message in FF in safe mode but laptop shut down so maybe my theory of safe mode being safe is wrong....)
the thing you mentioned about overheating sounds plausible because after the laptop shuts down, the screen goes black but the apple logo on lid is still lit for a few seconds, and then fan spins up, then it completely shuts down

@windowssuxx Here is a long shot, I recently had a MB Air that also shut down after a short time... turned out it was the camera that had failed.... maybe you can get it alive long enough to open photo booth to see it the cameras light flashes and or no picture...... long shot
