No Service in iPhone 5s

Hi,

My iPhone 5s is having the "No Service" problem. It happens in some particular place(s) but in some other place(s), the signal appears, though weak. So, one might tend to think it is a network issue and the signal is weak in the former place(s). But then, in the same problematic place, if I take the sim from my iPhone 5s and put it in another phone, the signal appears! So, it is not exactly about the place. There seems to be something about my iPhone 5s (along with the place). It's probably not some loose connection somewhere, but perhaps some receiver or antenna in my iPhone 5s has become weak. Any guesses? None of the software tips (like putting the phone in airplane mode and then back to normal, etc.) have helped. So, I guess some hardware issue is going on.

To give some more background of the problem, the "No Service" problem seems to have started appearing together with the battery drain-out issue of my iPhone 5s. The phone had even bulged slightly in one corner (top-right). I replaced the battery and the draining issue is resolved. But still the "No service" problem persists.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Nataraju

Based on your description, this issue seems to be hardware-related, especially since it coincided with battery swelling. Here are a few things to consider and possible fixes:

Antenna or Signal Amplifier Damage

Baseband Chip Issue

SIM Tray Contact Issue

Possible Fixes

  1. Reseat the SIM Card
    • Remove the SIM, clean the contacts, and reinsert. Also, try a different SIM to rule out compatibility issues.
  2. Check Internal Antenna Connections
    • If you're comfortable opening the device, inspect the antenna cables near the logic board for any looseness or damage.
  3. Restore or Reinstall iOS
    • If hardware checks don’t help, try restoring iOS via iTunes. If the baseband firmware is missing (check under Settings > About), this may indicate a hardware failure.
  4. Replace the Signal Antenna
    • If opening the device, consider replacing the antenna flex cable—especially if the issue started after battery swelling.
  5. Inspect the Baseband IC
    • If all else fails and the problem persists, the baseband chip might need reballing or replacement (requires micro-soldering).

Thanks a lot for the response and suggestions. I replaced the battery myself after watching videos, so I'm familiar with opening the device. But I'm not sure where the antennas are in iPhone5s. Somewhere I read that iPhone 5s has 3 antennas, possibly in 3 different places. So, which antennas should be checked and where they are is a question. I don't think WiFi antenna is a problem in my case, because WiFi is working fine. So, cellular antenna is possibly the one to be checked.

If you can give more specific details of the antenna related suggestions you made and even point out to any videos or pictures dealing with them, I think that will be greatly helpful. I need to know how a good antenna or connection looks like, so that I can figure out whether my antenna or connection is good. If it is just some loose connection, then perhaps it is relatively easier to deal with, but if some part is damaged and needs replacement, I need to figure out where to get that part.

@nataraju I don't have anything to contribute to solving your problem at the moment, but I did want to suggest that you're not likely to get any more information from the person who posted this answer, as it is obviously generated by AI. As such, there is no common sense involved, and the person posting the answer does not know any answers to the questions you're asking. Best case is they may put your new questions up to the AI bot and post that; something you can do just as well as they can.

I'm surprised the suggestions were AI-generated. I didn't think of that possibility. Thanks for pointing out. I'll adjust my expectations.
