ps3 slim wont boot unless I put it into safe mode

so my ps3 slim has been messed up for a while, when i turn it on, it beeps. it makes hard drive noises, and the screen is black. the tv acts as if it gets an input from the ps3. and then it clicks and all the lights go off. if i spam the power button it will boot to the home menu before it dies again. i can get it to boot into safe mode though. when it boots into safe mode, i can connect a controller and it will respond to input. i can attempt to restore the drive, but it will sit there at 0% for as long as i let it. is it fixable? is it just a dead HDD? or a more serious problem?

Well, at first I would replace the HDD and reinstall the software.

Most easy fix and also worth the try.

If this failed, then you do need to search further, but it does look like it's the HDD which need to be replaced!

hmm, i did try the hard disk, but that didnt seem to make much difference, and it doesnt have any error codes, and it no longer boots into safe mode

Hmm, what happens if you just leave the HDD out? It should boot automatically to save mode, is that correct?

Since when did this happen? After an update or just random?
