Known as the ''PS2'', it is a sixth-generation video game console first released by Sony in Japan in March 2000. The United States saw it later in 2000 with the SCPH-30000. Repair of this device requires only common tools, but can get tricky.

No video/Audio output in either AV or Composite. (Y/Pb/Pr)

I got a PS2 imported from Japan a while ago and just got to checking it out. For some reason, I get no video or audio output at all.

I've already tried the blind switch to AV trick with no success, and even got a dual AV/Composite cable and a tv that supports composite, and still nothing.

The console turns on, and I at least know that there's a connection to the controller (analog light works) but just no output of any kind.

I assume my AV port must be broken, but i'm not really sure how to truely diagnose the problem. Can anyone help?

Hi!

I would skip the composite cable. And just try the original AV cable.

Did you tried another AV cable and see if that works? It's worth a try.

Otherwise you can try another TV somewhere else and see if that works.

Could be the AV port, could also be a motherboard issue...

Please share a photo regarding the AV port, so that we can check as well.

Thanks!

@dan0 sorry for the delay, took me a bit to disassemble it. I've tried av cables and multiple tvs but still get nothing. I have pictures of both the av port, and the motherboard. Thanks for your help.

No problem at all!! The AV port looks fine.. what you can try is to clean it with isopropyl alcohol and see what happens. Hate to say it, but maybe the GPU is dead. Did you also measured some components?

@dan0 I'll try the alcohol in a sec. Also, what do you nean by measured some components (I'm a little new to this)

Okay, please let us know how it goes. You can check the fuses with a continuity test, are rhey fine? Also you can check the capacitors.

@dan0 Opened it up, saw some grime and cleaned it, cleaned the AV port, and still nothing. I don't have a multimeter on me just yet, so i can't check continuity. As of now i've just concidered it dead, as even if i had a multimeter, i'd need a soldering kit to replace anything broken on the board. I'll come back to it when i have the materials, but it's shelved for now. Thanks for your help though! Very much appreciated!

Yeah, it’s an motherboard issue.. the only way to be sure is to run tests. My pleasure! Who knows you find another one with a working motherboard :)
