HP 15-bs168cl with broken hinge mount- need help with repair

Hello

I have an HP 15-bs168cl that I love and do not want to throw away due to a broken hinge mount. Here's what happened:

I closed the cover with a pencil in the joint area of the hinge on the RH side. This, of course, put stress on the hinge and attachment point. The lid is fine, it's the palm rest upper corner that now lifts up and will eventually get worse and crack the palm rest corner, I'm sure. It's not cracked yet, but with the flexibility of the surface, it's only a matter of time before it fatigues and cracks! I saw that you put a link for HP 13 XXXXX with what to do to repair it. I would like the same info and link for MY model so I can remove the bottom and order whatever part is broken (I'm 90% sure it's NOT the hinge itself, as it still functions smoothly and is very stiff yet. The top Upper corner lifts when I raise or move the lid.

@kevinsvoboda remove the bottom cover and check somthing. It looks like this laptop has the hinges mounted to the bottom cover. We really need to see what may have broken etc. Post some good pictures of what you find out with your Question. That way we can see what you see. To remove the bottom cover use the guides (except the battery one) from here HP 15-bs168cl

If you go to the HP support site and enter your model number, they'll send you to a page where you can download all of the manuals and documents available for your laptop.

Following that link will take you to a page where you can download the Service and Maintenance manual for your computer.

I have to give HP kudos for making their repair manuals available to the general public; not that many manufacturers do that so credit should be given where it's due.

The worry I would have in your situation, Kevin, is that I've found that most laptops mount the display hinges on the motherboard, so if yours is flexing when it's opened, you could be flexing the motherboard, which would be bad, very bad. So yeah, head to page 72 of the M&S guide and that'll get you going on accessing the hinges so you can figure out exactly what's wrong.

For the sake of anyone else who comes along with the same problem you have, you might consider adding pictures of the damage once you get it open, and let us know what it ends up taking to fix the problem once you have it figured out. In fact, if you take lots of pictures as you work, you could use them to create your own guide to whatever repair you end up doing. It's easy, fun and will earn the respect of the repair community in appreciation of your work.

I have not removed the back cover yet, as I need to finish up today's work first. However, I did click on the HP 15 Laptop PC (Intel)HP 15g Laptop PCHP 15q Laptop PC Maintenance and Service Guide and on page 86 is the part list for the palm rest with back light. I have a black one so the part # shows 925011-001 (USA) . Im pretty sure this is the part that has the cracked supports for the brass inserts that the hinge screws screw into. (When I remove the cover later tonight ) I'll take pictures and post here later as well. But as a preemptive ... how or where do I order this part ( Palm rest surface /keyboard) ?

@kevin52247 Putting that part number into a Google search will bring up several options for replacement parts. I also did a little more digging into eBay and came up with new and used parts starting from $10 used and around $50 new. Here's the search string I used.
