{A1989 / EMC3214}—Released in July 2018, the 13" MacBook Pro features quad-core i5 and i7 processors and Intel Iris Plus integrated graphics.

Do yo know which cable is this one

While cleaning the interior of the Macbook A1989, i broke one ribbon cable on the top left corner (see picture).
Is anyone able to help me find this cable so i can change it?

I think that it is the complete touchID button now after investigations...

Many thanks

Thanks for your reply.

The one concerned is "Unplug Touch ID and Auxiliary port".

at the step "The second cable you will disconnect will be lightly adhered so carefully slide a plastic spudger under it and finally unplug it. The adhered cable is very thin and delicate so don't rush it and take your time." the cable broke so i need to replace it.

Do you know how to buy it ?

Many thanks again

This is the cable for Touch ID. It’s quite delicate and easy to damage (unfortunately)

You can replace this with another Touch ID button if you are not concerned about the Touch ID function, and just use it as a power button. But if you need Touch ID to function, you have a couple options, none of which are ideal.

  1. You can try to repair the cable, or take it to someone who can attempt this repair. But. You’ll need microsoldering know how and even experienced techs usually struggle with this due to the size (and thickness, o rather lack of thickness) of the cable. I remember reading that older MacBook you can swap chips on this flex around but I have no practical evidence that this is true, just hearsay. And that didn’t work for iPhone TouchID, so am skeptical. Plus it still would mean need for Microsoldering.
  2. You could also take it to Apple who can replace just Touch ID I think for this, without having to do the logic board too (don’t quote me on that I don’t remember what year that started to apply). But will be expensive relative to what you’re getting. They are able to pair a new button though.
  3. Or you can replace the board and make sure the one you purchase has a paired Touch ID button (like these).

There is no picture to look at, but have a look through MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2018 Logic board Replacement and you should be able to identify it there.

Sadly, the cable with the epoxy is the Touch ID flex cable! As you can see in Step 30. It is married with your logic board so if it’s damaged you’ll need a new logic board!

@danj Are there any options for him ie: can the unit still be used minus some touch functions? This would be helpful to him for sure to know....

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@livfe - I haven’t found a solution if (by default) TouchID is active as at that point the system is locked.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@danj IF I ever wasted my money on one of these newer units, 1st thing I would do is disable touch ID forever.....

@livfe - It’s not that simple! Your data is gold to a thief, and some governments are snooping into your phone, tablet and/or computer looking for things to attack your character or your friends.

So depending on what you do for a job or travel into countries that could arrest you for stuff you might have on your devices I will use what I could to protect my stuff
