Apple watch series 7 microphone replacement
Hi all, this is a pretty hard repair, but basically I did an oopsie,
You can skip this part if you dont care about the backstory.. skip to next paragraph.
I use glass screen protectors that are attached to the screen with a UV cured adhesive. After the protector cracks I soak the screen (watch upside down) in some 91% IPA to loosen the cured adhesive. Works great. However this time I accidentally poured too much IPA and it reached the mic hole, on top of that I got busy and left it soaking for about 2 days before getting to it. Everything went well but I think from the long soak in 91% IPA the MIC got killed (speaker is fine).
On series 7 the side button (also called Power Button), Mic and the crown are all on the same ribbon cable. So all 3 have to be replaced. Not a big deal, the part is like $5. The problem is taking the crown off. So I am wondering a few things.
- Does anyone have any experience with removing the crown on Apple Watch Series 7 or later (Series 6 and earlier was different).
- The mic is a MEMS chip, surface mounted to the ribbon cable. I am pretty good at micro soldering, I am sure Digikey (or if this is an Apple made chip) then harvested mics are available on 2nd hand market. Does anyone know what the chip is? Anyone tried replacing just it? Seems like its 2 pads usually for these, maybe 6 at most, and its probably like a sub $1 part and would save a lot of work removing the crown.
- Anyone have any experience with replacing the mic specifically? Every tutorial I look up ends up just getting a replacement chasis with the crown/power button and mic in it. I want to avoid this route because this would mean deeper dissasembly and removing the back glass as well. Not to mention a much higher price.
- What do you use to seal up the watch to maintain water resistance? Ive seen E7000 and T7000 used, but seems like a bad idea, has anyone actually tried re-opening the watch after using those? Seems like it would be permanently sealed (so no way to replace the battery in the future for example, or do another repair).
Thanks.
