@sarahbevins for you camera the LCD screen position is sensed by a pair of microswitches embedded in the LCD hinge. There should be three wires that comes from the hinger unit and connect to the LCD board. You would need to check those wires as they go through the hinges (unit).

Now, iFixit does not yet have any guides for the D5300. Most likely that you can use the D5100 and D5200, since those are very similar, to work on your camera. Nikon DSLR
