Sixth generation of Apple’s wireless base station, released June 2013. The tower provides dual-band support wireless access and is Apple’s first router with 802.11ac technology.

Rapidly flashing orange light, no response

I recently got an AE with the issue written in title. The only thing I tried yet is resetting it. It goes from green light to orange and then starts rapidly flashing.

I haven’t worked yet with these devices so I have no idea where to start looking for solutions.

It doesn’t show up in Airport Utility on a Mac, neither on a Windows PC.

What to do:

You will want to connect a straight RJ45 cable to one of the top three ports to your Mac system which has the AirPort utility and the bottom connection needs to connect to the internet via a direct wired connection. There is a small indicator LED within the RJ socket it should be lit if the connection is sound.

The following explains the AirPort Extreme LED sequences and what they indicate.

Off AirPort Extreme is unplugged.

Flashing green AirPort Extreme is starting up. The light flashes for one second.

Solid green

AirPort Extreme is on and working properly. If you choose Flash On Activity from the Status Light pop-up menu (in the Base Station pane of AirPort settings in AirPort Utility), the status light may flash green to indicate normal activity.

Flashing amber

AirPort Extreme cannot establish a connection to the network or the Internet, or is encountering a problem. Make sure you have installed AirPort Utility and use it to get information about what might cause the status light to flash amber. See “If Your AirPort Extreme Status Light Flashes Amber” on page 29 of the owners manual which I”ve posted here.

Solid amber

AirPort Extreme is completing its startup sequence.

Flashing amber and green

There may be a problem starting up. AirPort Extreme will restart and try again.

Solid blue

The base station is ready to allow a wireless client access to the network.

What’s Next

After you plug in your AirPort Extreme, use AirPort Utility to set it up to work with your Internet connection, USB printer or hard disk, or an existing network

Hi, thank you for your answer. Neither of the 3 ports lights up when I connect it to my Mac and Airport Utility doesn’t show anything. I just saw that even the bottom port where the LAN goes in doesn’t light up. Just the front LED keeps blinking rapidly.

@totyamuri - Sounds like the unit got a good zap like a power surge or lightning strike. Not much to repair here.

Taking it apart is not overly hard following the guide AirPort Extreme A1521 Logic Board Replacement see if anything looks burnt or stained.
