Intel's small-form-factor NUC (Next Unit of Computing) machines first introduced in 2012.

How to replace the 2.5" HDD ribbon cable? (NUC11PAHi7)?

My Intel NUC 11 (PAHi7) has a dislodged ribbon cable from the main board and it has been damaged I was wondering if this is fixable and if so where to get an up to spec ribbon cable?

Since Asus took over the support for Intel NUCs they don't do expired-warranty-repairs only one-for-one swaps for Intel products under warranty in HKSAR.

Hi @chopard

Check if the flex cable has a part number on it and if so search online for the part number only to find suppliers that suit you best.

According to this link the part number is 14-513-000102 (other supplier examples only)

The part number location is shown in the 2nd mini image of the part on the left (select the image and then zoom in)

I had a look at my own damaged ribbon cable and double checked the part number. It is as you said … 14-513-000102 and JSE 201226

Thanks for the links buying it from Amazon US is actually cheaper than Tao Bao.

I was so disappointed when Asus HK said they didn't do repairs (at least not for the Intel branded NUCs)

Thanks for the ray of hope.

The replacement part 14-513-000102 from Amazon US arrived, I replaced the old connector and ribbon with ease, I can see my 2.5" HDD again.

The only difficulty I encountered was figuring out which way the ribbon cable fit into the socket on the motherboard: blue tab faced the middle of the mainboard.

So thanks to jayeff the correct part was ordered and installed and things are working great again.

It sounds like you're dealing with a broken ribbon cable in your Intel NUC 11 (PAHi7), which is a bit tricky, but not impossible to fix. Let’s break it down step by step:

Steps to Replace the 2.5" HDD Ribbon Cable:

  1. Power Off and Disassemble:
    • Make sure the NUC is powered off and unplugged from any power source.
    • Remove the screws that hold the chassis together and carefully open the case.
    • Take note of any other components connected to the motherboard to avoid damage while working.
  2. Locate the Damaged Ribbon Cable:
    • The 2.5" HDD ribbon cable typically connects the internal storage (HDD or SSD) to the motherboard.
    • Carefully inspect the ribbon cable to see if it's just dislodged or fully damaged. If it’s just dislodged, you may be able to carefully reattach it. If it’s torn or otherwise broken, a replacement is necessary.
  3. Disconnect the Ribbon Cable:
    • Gently disconnect the ribbon cable from both the motherboard and the 2.5" drive port. If there’s a locking mechanism, carefully release it.
    • If you’re not familiar with the connector type, be sure not to force anything — gently wiggle it out if it’s stuck.
  4. Find a Replacement Cable:
    • Since the NUC 11 (PAHi7) uses a very specific ribbon cable, you’ll need one that is compatible with the pinout and form factor. The ribbon cable for 2.5" drives typically has a 22-pin or 40-pin connector, depending on the NUC model.
    • The best place to find an exact replacement would be:
      • Intel’s official parts store or Intel’s support page for accessories (though sometimes they don’t list parts separately for NUC models).
      • eBay – Sometimes NUC replacement parts, including ribbon cables, are sold by third-party sellers.
      • Third-party vendors like AliExpress or Amazon may also have compatible cables.
    • Look for part numbers related to the NUC 11 series or, if you have the damaged cable, check the numbers printed on it.
  5. Install the New Ribbon Cable:
    • Carefully install the new ribbon cable by connecting it to both the motherboard and the 2.5" drive port.
    • Make sure it’s seated correctly and that the connector’s locking mechanism (if any) is engaged.
  6. Reassemble the NUC:
    • After confirming the ribbon cable is correctly installed, reassemble your NUC, making sure all other components are properly connected.
    • Screw the case back together and plug it in to test.

Important Notes:

  • Ribbon Cable Specifications: Make sure you get the correct length, connector pitch, and pin count for the replacement ribbon. The NUC 11 should have a 2.5" SATA connection, but always verify the specific part number or consult the NUC manual.
  • Warranty: Since your NUC is out of warranty and ASUS does not offer repair services for expired warranties, you are on your own for this repair. However, it’s relatively straightforward if you can get the right replacement cable.

If you’re not comfortable performing this repair yourself, consider reaching out to a local repair shop that specializes in computer hardware. They might have the right tools and parts to help you.

Thanks for the detailed response, I too thought it was a simple ribbon cable replacement, though it appears the entire part including the sata 3 connector needs to be replaced.
