Updated version of the 2016 Retina MacBook. Model A1534, EMC 3099. Now features faster Kaby Lake processors up to 1.4 GHz Core i7 with Turbo Boost up to 3.6 GHz and up to 50 percent faster SSD, and supports up to twice the memory.

Replaced my battery but it stopped charging.

Hi all, I have a 2017 Macbook 12", one of the tiny ones. I replaced the battery recently with one I bought from iFixit. It now shows a cycle count of 17 on the new battery, but it has stopped accepting charging.

The charger makes the tone when I plug it in and it shows as charging, but I'm getting 0 mA for power in the system report. Sometimes it starts out and goes to 1.3 amps, but then drops off to under 100 milliamps after a couple minutes, but I'm just getting very inconsistent performance. I've tried two separate chargers (OEM 29W and a GaN Anker 30W) and two separate USB-C cables, and those didn't show any difference in performance no matter what combination.

I believe I have reset the SMC by holding shift-ctrl-option-power while the macbook was shut down.

I also did the battery conditioning/training thing after installing the new battery, where I charged it up to 100% and then let it run itself down to 0%.

The USB-C port has been pretty weak for a long time now--cables don't necessarily click in very well, is there a possibility this is a USB-C port issue? That is easily replaced if I need to do it I guess, thankfully it's on a separate board with a ribbon cable.

Thanks for any help!

Here's the shots from coconutBattery, if it helps.

Update: Here's the screenshot from this morning. The laptop had been standby overnight, not plugged into AC power. I shut it down right after this screenshot, closed the lid, and plugged it into AC power.

Here's what happened about 1.5 hours later when I started it back up by opening the lid, and pressing power, while the laptop was still plugged in.

I don't know why the battery would've drained like that while the laptop was shutdown and plugged into power!

If the USB-C ports are not holding the cable it’s likely worn and will need replacing.

To better diagnose your issue we will need a bit more info. Install CoconutBattery which lets you see more clearly what’s going on. Take a snapshot of the Apps main window and post it here so we can see it.

Thanks, I've installed CoconutBattery, at least an older version that works on Catalina. I added the screenshots to the original post, does this help at all?

@ericliu5350 - I do see some issues here which does lead me to a battery issue as the battery is running hot! And when it does it will stop charging it which is also the case here! I also see for such a new battery it’s expected life is now at 93% with less that 10 cycles.

For now shut the system down fully and disconnect the charger is a few hours giving the system to cool plug in the charger, still leaving the system off let it charge for a good four hours and then restart the system and snap a fresh capture after a few minutes to let CB gather its thoughts! Let’s see where we are then.

Thanks again, Dan. I do really appreciate your help. I just updated the original post with new pictures and a report of what happened. I only went for 1.5 hours because I do need to do some work on this laptop, and I suspected that the test was going to fail no matter how long i let it sit there. As you can see, the results do not look good!

@ericliu5350 - well your right not good the temp is more inline of charging. At this point time for a new battery but it’s also likely the charging logic on the logic board is in trouble too!

Do you have an Apple Store or an independent Mac repair shop near you? It might be wise letting them fix things.

I'll contact iFixit and see if they want me to try another battery, thanks for the help, Dan. I just replaced the battery last month and it was going so well...
