Check that the coolant thermostat is opening allowing the coolant to be pumped through the engine.

Here's a video that shows how to test it.

If it is faulty search online for 1997 LN107 Hilux turbo diesel 4x4 thermostat or 1997 LN167 Hilux turbo diesel 4x4 thermostat depending on exactly which model variant you have.
