Thermostat decreases by a few degrees every few seconds

A while back my kettle was scaled over pretty badly and as a result ended up boiling over several times. I set it to dry it with some desiccant packs, but since then, every time I turn it on, the thermostat readout starts ticking down from whatever my desired temperature by a few degrees every few seconds.

For example, if I turn the kettle on with cold water and set the temperature to 100 degrees Celsius, after about a minute, The set temperature readout (not the reported thermometer reading) willbe down to 90 degrees Celsius. So if I want boiling water, I have to keep turning the knob to the right.

What could be the problem here and how might I go about fixing it?

I've de-scaled the kettle several times since this problem started, and it makes no difference.

The problem seems to be with either the control knob or the thermostat

Sounds like the control panel got wet so it thinks you are pressing the lower temp button. The minerals within the water can leave a deposit or cause corrosion which electrically shorts out the wiring or interferes with the switches action. You might be able to clean the spillage using distilled water or 90% isopropyl alcohol. If you see green or rust you might try white vinegar or rust remover. Make sure the area if fully cleaned afterwards using cotton swabs.

as it turns out, descaling has no effect on the thermostat knob. it appears to either be the themostat circuitry, the control knob, or something else

@bennypower22259 - Didn’t think descaling would have altered things. But if the solution spilled into the electronics then that could be an issue. You’ll need to open the bottom to gain access to the board and then carefully remove it.

I opened her up with some prying picks, a triangle bit, and the steel prying bar from my toolkit (careful, there are some snaps around the sides which you need to pry apart gently).

I didn't notice any obvious corrosion, but i'm inexperienced.
