Why does my dishwasher work sometimes but not others?

I have a Whirlpool dishwasher that is about 5 years old. Lately, it has been not working more often than it works. What happens is I open it after the cycle to find that the tablet is undissolved on the bottom and the arm has not moved. I ran diagnostics, which sometimes gives the error code 4-3 and sometimes 1-2.

I don’t think it’s the circulation pump because, if it was, why would it work sometimes? If I reset it by cycling the electricity, that sometimes makes it work—but not always.

Any clue what could be going on here?

Hi David,

Can you open up your dishwasher and retrieve the model number for us? Whirlpool makes a LOT of dishwashers and we can't be sure of getting you accurate information without knowing exactly which one you have.

Sure, it’s WDF520PADM.

Do you have hard water? Lime buildup could be clogging the arm and the spray holes.

Also check if the timer is set.

I've deleted the request for the serial number of your washer; I have yet to see a repair request where that specific amount of detail was needed, and it can potentially have personally identifiable information, where the model number does not.

If line buildup were causing clogs, would it still work part of the time? Last night, everything worked great. We’ll see how it is today.

Here’s some helpful things to check from whirlpools website for the error codes you listed (also just good things to check)

Most of them just say to unplug and leave it unplugged for a while. If I were you I would leave it for a few hours to a day to let everything reset

Hi @david96040

What is the full model number of the dishwasher?

Reason for asking is that there are 8 WDF520PADM model variants i.e. WDF520PADM0, WDF520PADM2, WDF520PADM3, WDF520PADM5 → WDF520PADM9 and some have more parts than others.

A 4:3 error code indicates a wash motor problem.

As you know the error codes you most probably already have the tech sheet for the dishwasher. If not go to p.4 to view the Wash/Rinse circuit showing the operate path for the wash motor and check if all the accessible connections shown in the circuit are secure etc

A 1:2 error code indicates a control board issue i.e. software problem

If a power reset fixes the problem but it comes back then you may have to replace the control board. Knowing the exact model variant will help to find the correct control board for the model.

Hello again, if I need to replace the control panel, do I need to replace just the “control panel” or the “control panel assembly?” The part I’ve found is W10815819. Thanks.
