Glitching and pixel issues?

I have a 32" Samsung TV that is around 15 years old. It's been great but towards the end of January I began having glitching/pixel issues that comes up every now and then when I'm using my TV service provider. Sometimes it's worse than others but seems to be on most every channel. I reached out to my service provider but they are wanting to schedule me for a tech visit and if it's my fault and not a service provider issue, then I have to pay a ton of money.

Granted, I know my TV is very old and this could be a sign that it's the TV that needs replacing but one thing strikes me as odd with that idea. I have an external Roku attached to the TV. Whenever I'm using it instead of my provider's channels, it never has any issues. If it was the TV, wouldn't it be happening there as well?

Thanks for any help.

Hi @bd3616

What is the model number of the TV?

Assuming that the Roku is connected to a HDMI port on the TV, how are the "service provider's channels" connected to the TV e.g. WiFi/Ethernet cable connection from a router, cable box/stb/pvr connection to TV, etc?

If a "box" of some description, what is the make and model number of it?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@jayeff thank you for the reply. Sorry for leaving out some of those details. The model number for the TV is LN32C530F1F. I have a cable box through the service provider and it hooks up from there to the TV with an HDMI cable. The Roku also connects to the TV through a separate HDMI cable. I even tried switching the HDMI cables to see if the one for the Roku would fix the issue for the TV but sadly it didn't solve the problem.

@bd3616

What is the model number of the cable box?

Did you try switching between the TV's HDMI ports as well?

If the cable box has a Component video output option (red/blue/green video + red/white audio RCA type sockets) try connecting it appropriate cables example only) to the component video + audio input sockets on the TV.

To me its seem like there's a problem in the cable box (or signal input to the box from the service provider) and not in the TV.

Try a power refresh on the cable box and check if that resolves the problem i.e. switch off the cable box and then disconnect the power from the cable box. Wait 5 minutes and then reconnect the power and turn it on. Allow it to re-initialise and then check. You should be able to do this without needing to set it all up again as the box would have to be designed to cater for unexpected power outages etc.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@jayeff The model number for the cable box says Pace PX022ANM. Yes, I tried every combination I could think of for switching out the HDMI cables along with trying each port for each HDMI cable. I also turned off the power button located on top of the cable box and unplugged the power source, waited 10 minutes, reconnected it and still having the same issues from time to time.

I will note that at times it seems worse on some channels than others. Just within the past week or two I got a text from our provider saying some service was done so I was hoping it would fix the issue but unfortunately it didn't. Also if it helps, a few weeks ago I thought I noticed that when I began to slightly loosen the coax cable it seemed to worsen the same issue. But I've made sure everything is tightened, etc.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@bd3616 clarify this "began having glitching/pixel issues" a bit better. Glitching really don't mean much to me :-) All of this " a few weeks ago I thought I noticed that when I began to slightly loosen the coax cable it seemed to worsen the same issue." sounds like there might be an issue with either the main board or the connectors on the board. Have you tried to disconnect the cable box or the ROKU completely to see if it is one or the other that may cause interference?

Hi @bd3616

Bit confused here.

You said previously "...I've temporarily unplugged both the cable box and Roku but the issues continue like normal." which I understood to mean that the TV kept glitching, although I don't know what signal source was connected to the TV so that you could see this happening.

Then you said "So you want me to disconnect the HDMI cords that are connected to the TV that come from the cable box and Roku? I hadn't done that before no. I just tried it now and fiddled around with some menu selection screen but I don't see the issue being there at all when I did that." which I understood to mean that there was no glitching when viewing the menus.

Could you please describe the setup there e.g. cable box > HDMI > TV or cable box > coax > TV? Which is it you're using to watch TV channels?

If you've tried using either then is it glitching on both connection types?

Assuming you tried cable box > HDMI > TV this means that the box is in close proximity to the TV is this correct?

If so then if you get suitable length AV cables (examples linked above) and then see if cable box > AV > TV causes any glitches.

If not it could be the TV as both the HDMI and coax use digital signalling which means that the DSP (digital signalling processor) on the main board is being used, whereas AV is analogue and the TV doesn't need to use it. The menu screens are also analogue direct from the mainboard. Although in saying that since the Roku is also using digital signalling this indicates that it is not the TV.

If there are glitches when using cable box > AV > TV then it could be the cable box or the signal being sent from the service provider.

Update (03/18/25)

Hi @bd3616

You need to determine where the glitching problem is coming from.

The TV has 3 signal sources connected to it. A coax input from a cable box, a HDMI input from a cable box and a Roku HDMI input (is the Roku connected to the cable box or router by WiFi? It must get its signal from somewhere if using it for internet app streaming etc?)

So it could be either the TV or one of the signal sources.

To narrow it down do the following:

Disconnect all signal inputs from the TV and then connect the coax input only to the TV and check if the glitching occurs. Allow sufficient time to ensure you know whether it still is happening or not. Then is it Yes or No?

Next disconnect the coax input and connect the HDMI input from the cable box only to the TV and check if the glitching occurs. Allow sufficient time to ensure you know whether it still is happening or not. Then is it Yes or No?

Next disconnect the HDMI from the cable box input and connect the Roku HDMI input only to the TV and check if the glitching occurs. Allow sufficient time to ensure you know whether it still is happening or not. Then is it Yes or No?

Depending on the results:

If glitching occurs on all 3 input types then most likely it's the TV.

If glitching only occurs on the inputs from the cable box i.e. coax and HDMI or only 1 input from the cable box then it could be the cable box or the TV. Have you checked that the firmware installed in the cable box is the latest version? Check the user manual for the cable box and also the cable TV provider's website for details. With a lot a cable providers they automatically update the cable box firmware but not all of them do.

If glitching only occurs on the Roku HDMI input, then it may be the Roku device or whatever signal source it is connected to.

Once it is known what signal inputs are connected when glitching occurs then you can start to find out what to do next to try and resolve the problem

@jayeff I'm sorry for the confusion. That reply was towards @oldturkey03. In essence what I meant by that was that I've tried unplugging both the cable box and Roku at once and then plugging them back in but the problem still existed. But what I did additionally was that I disconnected the HDMI cords from the TV and just tried the menu selection screen on the TV but the issue was not there.

The setup here is a TV, external Roku, tv box and router. The Roku attaches to the TV via one HDMI cord. The cable box attaches to the TV via another HDMI cord and the cable box also has a coax cable that runs to it and then connects to a "splitter" and then that splitter has a coax cable running into the wall. The other part of that "splitter" has another coax cable that runs to the router. To watch TV channels, I use my provider's broadcasting which is through the TV box. Yes, everything is right next to each other including the cable box to the TV.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@jayeff Also, if it helps....a week ago I tried my provider's "on demand" service. So in other words, I picked a TV show that had already happened and watched it back later through the service. I noticed none of the issues happening. So the issues happening have only been through watching live TV if that's the case.

I don't have separate AV cables but what I do have is an old gaming system which I believe uses AV cables. But it wouldn't connect to the cable box. It just connects to the TV. I could pull that out and hook it up, etc. if that would help us get answers? Just let me know what I need to do, thanks. Also, did that link to the thread with other people mentioning similar issues help at all?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@bd3616

Try disconnecting the cable box from the TV i.e. both coax and HDMI and only use the roku hdmi which I assume connects to the router and see if it glitches.

Then disconnect the Roku hdmi from the TV and then connect the cable box using the hdmi only (coax not connected) to the TV and check for glitches. Then remove the cable box hdmi and connect the cable box coax and do the same.

The idea is to find out which signal source is the cause of the glitches i.e. you only having one source connected at a time so essentially your checking each one in isolation.

If both the roku hdmi and the cable box hdmi connection are showing glitches but not the cable box coax, it may be a problem with the HDMI controller in the TV, if all 3 then it may be a mainboard problem, if only one then it may be a signal source problem from the associated source but see what you find first.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@jayeff Thank you for the detailed instructions but I'm very confused right off the bat. Nothing connects to the router, including the roku. The only thing going to the router is a coax cable and power cord. The coax cable goes into a splitter which then has another coax cable that goes into the wall and then the power cord goes into an outlet.

So do you mind retyping the steps with what you want me to do, with that in mind? Sorry I couldn't understand how to do everything else past that and the instructions were a bit confusing. Thank you! I really appreciate your help.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@bd3616,

Is the roku connected to the cable box?

It must get its signal from somewhere if using it for streaming or watching TV channels?

@jayeff Just wanted to follow up on this. Back on March 26, I was informed my service provider was doing updates in my area so I would be without my services during that time. Once they finished, my glitching/pixel issues have seemingly gone away and are not an issue anymore. So in the end, it didn't seem to be anything wrong on my end. I just wanted to say thank you for all your help these past few months and for your patience in trying to help me!
